As the nights draw in there's more reason than ever to snuggle up on the sofa and get stuck into a new book. This week we're giving away 50 copies of It Started With Paris, the heartwarming new novel by Cathy Kelly.

Michael and Katy get engaged on a romantic trip to Paris, but the proposal is only the beginning of the story. At home they deal with an array of friends and family all desperate to have their say about the wedding day.

Just finished ploughing my way through "It started with Paris." Had to force myself to go back to it at times though.

I'm afraid I found it all rather superficial and bland with a lack of character development. My favourite "person" in the book was Pixie the dog.

Full of all the usual suspects - assertive and confident men and women, weak men and women, cads and bounders, strong ladies and strong chaps with lovely hair and eyes of various colours and hues.
A pleasant enough story and very easy to read. But just not enough "oomph" or depth for me.

All in all, the experience of reading this book was, I found, a bit like drinking a cup of very milky, lukewarm, instant coffee - not exactly unpleasant, but instantly forgettable.

Part of the joy of reading for me is a brand new hardback, the cover too is a joy and this one certainly had a very interesting one.
Sadly the story for me was quite hard going, I just couldn't seem to work out who was who there were so many characters.
It took me to get three quarters through before I had worked most of them out.
I really do wonder what the story line was all about.
The fact that the author felt there was no need for graphic detailed sex, violence or bad language was a rare treat in this day and age and I feel that there is nothing in this book that would offend anyone.
Thankyou so much for the free copy that has given me the opportunity to read the story and thankyou too to the author who must have spent a great deal of time in the writing.

This isn't normally the kind of book that I would read, preferring fast pace thrillers but I was happy to have something different to try and the cover is very 'pretty'.

The book is quite sedate and as weathermum says there is nothing to offend anyone, but having said that there is also nothing to keep you going. If you are looking for a story about the everyday lives of people in an extended family then this is it, however I like something with a bit more point. I also found the Leila/Tynan/Devlin relationship just too predicatable.

I will probably pass it on to my mum as I think she would appreciate it more than me. Thank you again for sending me this book, it's always nice to receive something free in the post :)

I am still plodding my way through this one! Will get there eventually!

dinkystinky · 18/12/2014 16:05

I have to admit I admitted defeat 2/3 of the way through. The cover is pretty. I couldn't really get that involved/care that much about the characters.

countingdown · 08/01/2015 10:26

I finally got round to finishing this book. I had been reading other books in between picking this up, so it took ages to plough my way through! It was an enjoyable story - one which was very obvious and predictable, but still enjoyable. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this to anyone, though will probably pass it on to my mum.

Thank you again for sending me a copy.

Susangilley7 · 15/02/2015 16:23

Love a hardback cover and the design of cover was very appealing. However I found the story predictable and not an easy read. Hence the delay in reviewing. Passed it on to my daughter.

ChantenayCarrot1 · 15/02/2015 17:52

I have just finished this book and I'm slightly embarrassed that it took me so long. I would ordinarily never stop start with a book, in this case though I actually gave up twice!

I too loved the hardback cover design but found the book incredibly difficult to finish. It was dull, no real spark, predictable and there were far too many new characters for me to really connected with the story.

I didn't really warm to any of the characters and sadly I wouldn't recommend the book. I've passed it on to my sister so it'll be interesting to see what she thinks.
