Dd (11) likes historical fiction. I hate it so I'm not very clued up about what to suggest she reads.

I thought about Jean Plaidy but don't know if the books are bodice-rippers or whether they are seemly (!) and, also, decently historically accurate.

Another one who started reading Jean Plaidy at that age and I honestly think I have a better grasp of a broad range of English history than most because of her. I know about the Plantaganets, Matilada and Stephen fighting for the crown, the hanovers before they were English kings etc. I think she is brilliant.

I have read multiple biographies of Queen Victoria and read her letters too but recently I visited London and went to Kensington palace for the first time. When I went into the room in which victoria held her first counsel and saw the stairs she descended when she was woken up because William IV had died it was Jean Plaidy's descriptions that were in my head.

She is actually pretty accurate historically too. Would love if my children read her.

Well, that's a good recommendation!
