Any recomedations for Madame de Pompadour or Marie Antoinette?

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good historical fiction based on these two women. My brain is not strong enough for a proper biography at the moment. But after a trip to Versailles would like to get a feel for the atmosphere at the palace and knowing a little about these two women it would be nice to get that from their view.

Can anyone think of any novels that might be worth a try?

Thanks.

Jen Plaidy! She spins a great yarn - quite lightweight. But you sure as heck end up knowing more and empathising with the characters. I feel like quite the expert.
It is worth reading the Madame Serpent ones too (Catherine de Medicis saga).

Have fun!

I loved, loved, loved Jean Plaidy! For Madame de Pompadour, suggest Louis the Well-Beloved of hers. There was also one about Madame du Barry as well, which overlaps with Marie-Antoinette's time at Versailles, but I can't recall the name.

For Marie-Antoinette, Antonia Fraser's biography is very thorough but a bit hard going.

I enjoyed the Antonia Fraser book.

Thanks all, I've been doing an amazon search of your recommendations. Read a review on a Jean Plaidy novel that Nancy Mitford did a biography of Madame du Pompadour. Might give that a whirl too.

Plenty to keep me busy. Smile

The Antonia Fraser biography of Marie Antoinette was brilliant, not as dry as a lot of historical biographies.

Came on to say the incomparable Nancy Mitford but you're already there!
