It's exactly three months to Christmas so I'm thinking about what books I would like to find under the tree. Would anyone like to tell me their favourite book of the year so far? I think mine would have to be Americanah. (I know it's very early to be thinking of Christmas btw but I like to get some small bits early before I have to do toys.)

I just finished Her by Harriet Lane and it was very well written but I thought she signposted the ending way too early. Would be a good easy read for Christmas though.

Books that I've loved this year: Carole Matthews A Place to Call Home, Carole Matthews - The Christmas Party; Jenny Colgan: The Little Beach Street Bakery; Lilian Harry: Celebrations in Burracombe; Jill Mansell: The Unpredictable Consequences of Love; Chrissie Manby: A Proper Family Holiday; Dorothy Koomson: The Flavours of Love.

Life after life
The Rosie Project
We are all completly beside ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler

I'm changing my book of the year because I just finished The Son by Philipp Meyer. It's an epic about 4 generations of a Texas family. It's the closest thing to East of Eden that I've read in years.

I am one of the ones who loved The Girl with all the Gifts. I don't think its a classic or anything but very enjoyable and made me feel emotional which is the sign of a good book for me - that and I read it in one sitting one (lazy) Sunday.

Fannydabbydozey, Why did Daughter make you mad? It's getting good reviews on amazon so I'm curious about it but I've read too many plot-holed books already this year.

Just finished The Goldfinch and as I anticipated, it'll be going on my top five list at the end of the year. I'd say it was a masterpiece, actually. Loved it.

mmack · 24/10/2014 14:37

Lockersonmymind, I'm just finishing A Tale for the Time Being and it is amazing. So sad and so beautifully written.

Books published this year that I've read and loved are:

The Bone Clocks, David Mitchell
Mr Mac and Me, Esther Freud
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, Haruki Murakami
The Children Act, Ian McEwan

I'm currently reading The Lives of Others by Neel Mukherjee and, though I'm only a quarter way through, it's shaping up to being another outstanding 2014 book.

New Shardlake book just out that I've yet to read though which I have high hopes for.

This year has been disappointing for me books-wise. I've read about 30 and enjoyed The Goldfinch and, for a beach read, The second JK Rowling / Robert Galbraith one. I've read a lot of the ones previously mentioned, but don't rate them. I am reading We Need New Names, and enjoying it, and hoping that that and Americanah and Children Act will lift the average by the end of the year!
