I haven't read a Rebus novel for a long time, struggling to remember much of the content but was a little surprised that the school library has recommended one to my 13yr old- is it really suitable? Can any Rankin fans advise please?

Drinking, smoking and violence. Not sure they are any worse than the hunger games?

Kind of moral underneath. More so than the hunger games which is pretty ambiguous on the topic of retributive murder. And I quite like Siobhan. And Malcolm Fox.

Mmmm. Maybe not actually much worse than Agatha Christie and I read most of those at 11 ish I think.

No worse than Alex Ryder and more honest about unsatisfactory relationships and sex. And if you were reading Dick Francis and Hardy, as I was at that age, more realistic. Peter Robinson is perhaps a bit gentler, though, with his Banks series. The gentlest is the Hamish Macbeth by Beaton.

Thanks- I guess it can't be worse than half you see on TV. I should be grateful I have a son who is into literature- It makes a change to be discussing the age suitability of books vs xbox games!
Seriously think there's an argument for age ratings on books though.

I think they are great police procedurals - and surprisingly chaste actually

Ian Rankin is one of those genre-transcending mystery writers; the Rebus books are very well written and morally complex. And I agree with BogQueen, surprisingly chaste, not a lot of sex or gratuitous bad language.
