does anyone have any recommendations for anything similar?

Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series is good. Or Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. WoT is very long at 14 books so it'll keep you busy for a while Grin

StillSquirrelling · 22/09/2014 20:21

The Wheel of Time series is very good - although make sure you read it all consecutively as it's very involved and complex. Took me years to read the entire thing because I'd read one or two, leave them for a while, pick up the next one and have to abandon it to re-read the others, as I'd forgotten everything!

Another series that's really good is Katharine (yes, with an 'a') Kerr's Deverry series. There are quite a few in that too.

Which, in particular, of Robin Hobb's series did you enjoy? If the Rainwilds books were one of them, then you might enjoy Anne McCaffrey's Pern books about dragonriders.

Another vote for mistborn!

Kettricken · 22/09/2014 21:45

Katharine Kerr is definitely very good!

Definitely Raymond E. Feist. And Patrick Rothfuss is a must!

MayasPapaya · 23/09/2014 21:57

Patrick Rothfuss - run, don't walk, he's fantastic. Luckily, perhaps, he's only written two books so far and is working on the third of the trilogy so it's easy (and cheap) to get into.

TheFirstOfHerName · 23/09/2014 22:00

The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss.

Kerberos · 25/09/2014 08:09

Yep definitely Patrick Rothfuss and Name of the Wind.

fatowl · 28/09/2014 11:32

I like Katherine Kurtz's Deryni novels, similar to GoT in a way because there are so many characters you need a glossary at the end to keep them in order.

I must read Robin Hobb, so many people have recommended

insancerre · 28/09/2014 11:41

Try Stephen kings the dark tower series. Not like his normal stuff but so good and at 7 books will take some time to get through.

PetraArkanian · 28/09/2014 11:51

Don't start the Patrick Rothfuss until he has written all 3!! Otherwise you will be cranky! He was also not the nicest of people I'm afraid...very grumpy at an autograph signing. Robin Hobb was LOVELY though!

I adore Janny Wurtz - again the Mistwraith series isn't finished but there are 10+ books already written and they are fab!!

Also you could try Jacqueline Carey Namaah series...they are really good.

Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry is one of my favourites.

High fantasy but brilliant and very moving.

ChunkyPickle · 28/09/2014 12:01

I love the Robin Hobb and was coming to say Trudy Canavan (although not as good IMO, she's still very readable)

She also writes as Megan Lindholm so look out for those too - I've read some short stories and thought they were very good.
