Absolutely loved this book, the writing and the story. I am not usually a big reader of historical fiction but was completely absorbed by Iceland in the 1800s and just wanted to recommend! One of the books I've most enjoyed this year and I have read a lot of good ones.

Anyone else read this?

I'm reading it and loving it, almost finished. We were in Iceland last month on holiday and stayed one night in the area where the book is set, so I'm finding it particularly fascinating.

Yes, I liked it too - especially the inevitable ending.

Good, isn't it? Beautifully written and very evocative.

The ending just stunned me - it was very well written. I thought it was a great book and I re-read it immediately. I have heard other people who completely disagreed and thought it was a load of drivel though, I guess it's a marmite kind of book!

I absolutely loved it, very atmospheric - unputdownable in my opinion

I thought it was brilliant - reminded me of Alias Grace. The weather was like a character in itself.

Felt so desperately sad for female paupers then - your choice was, let your male employer shag you or be turned out into the snow. Heartbreaking.
