Just came across this link:
www.quora.com/What-are-the-most-powerful-and-insightful-short-stories-that-you-have-read

and have been reading www.amazon.co.uk/Collected-Stories-Lydia-Davis/dp/0241950031

What are your favourite short stories?

I used to get impatient that short stories finish so quickly but now as I grow older I enjoy them more and more.

Come to Me by Amy Bloom is worth a read and there are quite a few of her shorts online and in various publications.

The Best American Short Stories (edited by Heidi Pitlor) is a favourite anthology of mine. Perfect for dipping in and out of as is The O’Henry Prize Stories (annual)with Laura Furman as series editor. The stories are selected by a jury of three people leading to quite an eclectic mix.

Finally, The Vintage Edition of Contemporary American Short Stories, edited by Tobias Wolff is brilliant.

Now this is a very retro suggestion and you'd need to buy a copy, but I recommend ' Seduction Theory ' by Thomas Beller.

It is a fantastic read
