Books you've deliberately stopped reading?

(Apologies if I'm repeating a subject here, MN search function not behaving ATM!)

I have unintentionally stopped reading many books over the years, sometimes I've found them too hard to get into and/or just put them down somewhere and forgotten to pick them back up Blush. Any of these, I'd like to think one day I'll start them again and finish them.

But I've only ONCE deliberately closed a book never to open it again. It was Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller. I don't think of myself as a prude, but it was just... yuck.

Fifty shades of grey

BabCNesbitt · 07/09/2014 07:54

Shantaram. An 800-page book group choice! I hated the self-aggrandising main character, the too good to be true love interest, the "oh aren't all these foreigners so exotic but look I can fit right in with them" gubbins. Confused

Made it about 200 pages in then sent it cheerfully off to the charity shop.

magimedi · 07/09/2014 07:54

Exactly the same as wannabe - got to about p20 & just gave up as it was so badly written.

Pinkje · 07/09/2014 07:57

Eat, pray, love. I got stuck at the pray bit.

Cherrypi · 07/09/2014 08:01

Many books. I threw a Fay Weldon book against a wall once it irritated me so much.

kite runner - couldn't get into the book and gave up at chapter 4
Two towers - having read the fellowship of the rings got to the 2nd chapter of 2 towers and realised i had no idea why they were on a journey nor why i should care. suspect it would make far more sense now have seen the films.
Great expectations - they count the fucking puddles.... got books with the obsessive attention to detail

there are probably loads more.
I also have a list of books that i did read all the way through but wish i could unread.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 07/09/2014 13:30

*got bored with the book's

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/09/2014 15:52

Another one for Shantaram.

I think the friend who recommended it to me was slightly offended.

sweetnessandlite · 07/09/2014 15:54

Fifty Shades of Shite
This

gamerchick · 07/09/2014 15:57

Geralds game... that swine got frizzbied across the room and I like Stephen King.

50 shades was awful.. I can't believe they've made a film out of that pile of wank Hmm

CiderwithBuda · 07/09/2014 16:02

Wolf Hall. Can't remember if it should be Wolfe Hall. It was crap however it's spelt!

Am struggling with The Distant Hours at the moment. It might be because I keep MNing in bed instead of reading it so am not getting into it properly.

There are others but I've blocked them out.

Madamecastafiore · 07/09/2014 16:03

Lee Child books after the fuck up that is Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.

DuchessofMalfi · 07/09/2014 16:08

Oh that Dan Brown crap. Da Vinci something. Did I say it was crap? It was Grin. Wanted to throw it out of the window only it wasn't mine Grin

WhatWouldBlairWaldorfDo · 07/09/2014 16:09

50 shades. All facebook was raving about it. Thought 'it cant be that bad'. It was.

Lord of the rings. Just couldnt get into it. Also started the first film a million times. Think i've lasted about 20mins.

We are completely beside ourselves. Found it impossible to actually care. Got to the twist, thought it might get interesting. Still didnt care so deleted it.

ComeHeather · 07/09/2014 16:10

Loads. Life's too short for reading a book you don't like.

Fifty Shades
LoRd of the Rings
Wild Swans (the last third)
Cloud Atlas (loved Thousand Autumns though)
Kite Runner
Life of PI

All the Austen's except 'Mansfield Park' and 'P and P' which is ok if you are laid up with the flu or something

All the Harry Potters (I tried, I really did, but no)

NickiFury · 07/09/2014 16:11

Lord of the Rings Blush
The Slap

ComeHeather · 07/09/2014 16:12

YY to

Eat Pray Love

And when the Da Vinci code was out and everyone was raving about it, I thought I was going mad or they were in on some big joke....it was so laughably awful. One good friend really went down in my estimation over that book... She was/is convinced it is fact.

ComeHeather · 07/09/2014 16:13

Room.

All the misery lit ones.

Muskey · 07/09/2014 16:13

Yes to Wolfe hall.....what was Hillary mantle on it was so boring. Currently I am reading the sunne in the splendour and have decided to skip three chapters because I know exactly what happens (history major)to who but it is so well written I don't want to be balling my eyes out especially as I read it on my way to and from work and no one wants to see a soggy Muskey on public transport

ThursdayLast · 07/09/2014 16:14

Life of Pi. Just couldn't do it.

Loved the film though. Pretty much the only time it's ever worked that way round for me.

lettertoherms · 07/09/2014 16:16

The Fault in Our Stars.

People go on and on about how it's beautiful... I thought the way he talked about children with cancer was fucking disgusting.

Strawdolly · 07/09/2014 16:18

Alan Bennett's autobiography. What makes him think anyone wants to know about his wanking? Put me right off him.

Gave it to my mum Grin

The Historian - and I so wanted to love it. Ditto
Rivers of London - don't understand why it's so popular Confused
London Fields - in gave me so big a rage I will never try and read another Amis novel, because he gives me the rage.

But then I loved some of the books mentioned on this thread.....
