She has just started an A level in history and is studying the period of the Crimea up to the first world war. Also the Russian Revolution. She is really keen to read some fiction covering these periods to get some background knowledge and familiarity...Any ideas??

Birdsong...it will change her life, by Sebastian Faulkes. 1st world war but British based rather than Soviet.

Terrierterror · 04/09/2014 16:51

Anna Karenina

Terrierterror · 04/09/2014 16:54

Some of the Boris Akunin historical crime novels.

GrouchyKiwi · 04/09/2014 17:01

Not fiction, but Edvard Radzinsky wrote a VERY readable biography of Rasputin that covers a lot of the Russian Revolution. (Rasputin: The Last Word)

I read it when I was about 19.

A Long Long Way by Sebastian Barry is very good (and I think OK for a teen). It's about a young Irish boy who volunteers to fight for the Allies. Also covers some of the Easter Rising.

Life Class by Pat Barker - also WWI, but from the perspective of someone working in the medical corps. Might be worth checking this one, but I think it will also be ok.

GrouchyKiwi · 04/09/2014 17:03

Hm. Just realised that those two are more WWI than the period before.

One set in the Crimea that I've read is The Rose of Sebastopol by Katherine McMahon. Some love it, I didn't really, but I think it's supposed to be well researched.

poshfrock · 04/09/2014 17:15

Dr Zhivago - Boris Pasternak ( and the film of course....)
The Lady with the Lapdog - Anton Chekhov ( short stories)
A Young Doctor's Notebook - Mikhail Bulgakov ( also shown on BBC 4 recently with Daniel Radcliffe in lead role- maybe available on catch-up)
The Twelve - Aleksander Blok ( poetry)
Envy - Yuri Olesha ( novel about the clash of pre and post Revolutionary mentalities)
Fathers & Sons - Ivan Turgenev

Non - fiction
Nicholas & Alexandra - Robert K Massie ( about the Romanov family)

If I think of any more I'll come back ( I have a degree in Russian and English literature so I have loads on my bookshelves).

The siege by Helen Dunmore. Brilliant book.

Takver · 09/09/2014 20:54

Non fiction, but I first read Testament of Youth as an older teenager, and I think in some ways it's best read at that age.

secretsquirrels · 10/09/2014 16:45

The Ken Follett "Century" series.
Not great literature but the first one in particular covers the events up to about 1920. A little bit of sex in there but suitable enough for a 16 year old. They are long but easy reads.

Hullygully · 12/09/2014 08:49

Oh more ideas - didn't see these, thanks.

We watched Nicholas and Alexandra the other day...dear lord.

This book is fascinating account of an English woman writer visiting Russia. There are paperbacks available but this Kindle one is a bargain.

Delafield was an amazingly smart, witty writer and I learnt so much from this book,

Don't forget the Kindle app is free so don't let it being on Kindle put you off!

Hullygully · 14/09/2014 12:03

And provincial Lady

Ta!

I have a list of KS5 historical novels on my website that might help. She might want to look at the KS4 list as well.
