Just that really...tried to get into the game of thrones series but just wasn't doing it for me.

Can't find anything I can sink my teeth into and I miss reading

So can anyone recommend any fantasy books that are worth a read?

The Deverry ones is that Camber of Culdi(sp) etc? Read some of them SOOO long ago I can barely remember a thing!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 22/09/2014 23:00

No ignore me I am thinking of something else!

strawberrypenguin · 22/09/2014 23:03

Daughter of smoke and bone trilogy by Laini Taylor - amazing! and Wool by Hugh Howey - more scifi than fantasy but its brilliant

ShadowsShadowsEverywhere · 22/09/2014 23:04

I came on to say Wheel of Time as well. It's epic, 14 books, and the fantasy world he creates has so much more depth than a lot of other fantasy writers; there are layer upon layer of sub plots, sub sub plots. Complex relationships between nations, individuals. It's a true epic. I've read the whole lot so many times and still take something new away with each read. And Robert Jordan writes action very well, largely due to the fact that in RL he was a huge weapons collector and actually used to learn to use rare weapons in order to write skillfully about the use of weapons in his books.

Sootgremlin · 23/09/2014 00:01

I came on to say Dragonlance too, I was obsessed with them as a teen. Going to look them up on kindle now, thanks just Grin

Whiskwarrior · 23/09/2014 00:03

That's really interesting to read about Robert Jordan learning to use the weapons he wrote about, Shadows - I'll tell my Mum that tomorrow because she loved the Wheel of Time books too. We both adore Perrin (and the wolves, of course) and think Mat is an absolute scream (especially with his 'I must stop Olver hanging around the soldiers so much - they're teaching him bad ways' schtick Grin).

Envy@ signed copy of new Robin Hobb book (although I know my local Waterstones have them - I just can't justify paying for the hardback).

ShadowsShadowsEverywhere · 23/09/2014 00:12

Yes Perrin's my favourite too. Theres a WOT forum online and via that a shop, you can buy the Aes Sedai ring and a few other bits. I've been trying to justify buying one for years but still haven't actually gone ahead and bought one! Jordan was a very interesting man, def worth reading up on his life.

Sparklypants · 29/09/2014 18:54

Not sure if anyone has suggested these but the Fionavar trillogy by Guy Gavriel Kay are brilliant.

GertiesMum · 29/09/2014 20:30

Agree Raymond Feist - magician series; David Eddings; and Trudi Canavan.

Game of thrones is good, but brutal in places.

His dark materials - brilliant.

And I just loved Janny Wurts and Raymond E Feist Empire collaboration - genius! Read and re read.

I dont normally go for fantasy books but remember being enthralled by Clive Barkers Weaveworld (long time ago though)

TheTravellingLemon · 30/09/2014 19:25

I bloody love this genre Smile

YY to the mistborn series. Brilliant read.

Joe Abercrombie's series. I can't remember which one is first. Maybe Before they are hanged or The blade itself

The name of the wind and The wise man's fear by Patrick Rothfuss are both great.

I have to confess to loving Game of thrones though.

TheTravellingLemon · 30/09/2014 19:28

Piebald Oh Weaveworld! I'd forgotten about that. The first fantasy book I ever read. I think I was about 15. Loved it.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 30/09/2014 19:35

I love Robin Hobb's Farseer books too. Thanks for starting this thread, have loads to add to my list of Must Reads :)

Iggly · 30/09/2014 19:37

Robert Jordan although the series takes a dip in the middle.

Terry brooks shannara series. Love those.

Robin hobb is good too.

I will steal ideas from here as miss a good fantasy book!

MehsMum · 30/09/2014 19:42

I second Meerka's suggestion of The Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula le Guin). Very readable, a little bit creepy somehow, with a strong sense of a whole world beyond the pages of the book.

Tomuchtosay · 05/10/2014 23:07

Hello all, New to MN but love books.

Would recommend Juliet Marrillier and the seven waters series.
Robin Hobb
Laini Taylor
Sarah j.maas (more young adult read but good eyewash)
And many more!
All Trudi Canavans books but black magician trilogy I read over and over I liked it so much (and maybe always wishing it would end differently!)

AnotherStitchInTime · 05/10/2014 23:18

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson

I enjoyed his Mordant's Need duo too.

CatKisser · 05/10/2014 23:22

I'm late to the party but I'm going to say Wheel of Time as well. Admittedly, I got lost ad gave up at about the fourth book, but I started them at about the age of 14, so maybe should try again.
The first book is outstanding. One of those "quest" type books involving a purposeful journey and all the perils along the way... Loved it.

HeideGoody · 13/10/2014 21:02

Please have a look at Graham Joyce's books - not all are pure fantasy, but they will all blow you away.
I can't see that anyone's mentioned Neil Gaiman, but if you liked his Neverwhere then you should check out the Birmingham equivalent, which is James Brogden's The Narrows.

Roobix04 · 13/10/2014 21:07

The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

upandawayy · 15/10/2014 20:15

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch is a great book. Does take forever to get into but we'll worth it.

Bumchin101 · 16/10/2014 14:51

Wow didn't realise more were added :) will have to look all these up and give them a go :) thanks so much guys

Robert Rankin if you want something far fetched

CrawlyDreads · 21/12/2014 14:43

I agree about Robin Hobb's live ships trilogy. Its got everything you need from romance and family intrigue to sea serpents and pirates. Characters are real and have all got great progression and some are genuinely surprising. Brilliant choice.

Also Trudi Canavan's Black Magician trilogy. Again she has some of the best characters around and its an epic story with some really emotional moments that make it a must read. I love these books so much.

Peter V Brett is writing the Demon war cycle which is three books (soon to be four) out of five. Set in a world where humanity hides behind special wards at night as demons rise from the earths core, they wait the 'Deliverer' who will fight the demons. Fantastic writing and really easy to read its a well imagined world with a history that's nice and solid. Different cultures and classes and good helping of epic destiny and doom.

Hope these were helpful :)
