Californiafrau's thread on Goodnight Owl reminded me it was in the box of picture books I put away for any future grandchildren. I also have:
Rosie the Hen
The Elephant and the Bad Baby
The Tiger who came to Tea
Mog the Forgetful Cat
Teddy bear books (Teddy Bear Farmer, Teddy Bear Coalman etc)
Old Bear & Jolly Tall
Alfie's Feet & Alfie Gets in First
Mrs Pig's Bulk Buy & Garth Pig & the Icecream lady
Bathwater's Hot & Two Shoes new Shoes
5 minutes Peace
The Hungry Caterpillar
Peepo & Each Peach Pear Plum
Winnie the Witch
and
(my absolute favourite)
Dogger
You can probably tell from these just how old my DD & DS are - so what should I add from the new generations?

i am an embroiderer so love any books using embroidered pictures as illustratioins. have all the books by an embroidery designer called belinda downes, she's illustrated things like snow white, a book of nursery rhymes, every little angels handbook etc (really sweet and girly books). one of the books is signed by her and i also have one of her original embroideries framed which dh bought for me as a christmas present. they will all be put away and passed on.

I think picture books are fab and not just for little kids. I want to show some picture books again to my own kids when they're teenagers, never mind my grandchildren.

Like Something Else (can't remember author) and Anthony Browne books like Voices in the Park.

TheQueenOfEyeSpy · 18/09/2006 22:20

Ooh yes, we had The Elephant and the Bad Baby when I was little, I really think it taught me to say please actually. It's a really good lesson about imposing on other people - I never wanted to be the bad baby!

I had a really interesting Berenstain Bears nature book and DD got one of theirs for younger children from the library and is loving it too.

canadianmum · 24/09/2006 19:37

The Richard Scarry books which my 3 year olds have loved since they were about 18 months.

Cars, Trucks and Things that go

Winnie the Witch
Kipper
Pumpkin Soup & Pipkin of Pepper
Lullabyhullaballoo & Bear by Mick Inkpen
The Little Red Train by the welsh chap - the detail is amazing.

Joolstoo · 24/09/2006 20:41

althought I did buy Teddy Robinson for dgs1

christie1 · 24/09/2006 22:08

all my Dr. Suess books, Madeleine, my thomas the tank engine and winnie the pooh books, anythinghard cover like a book of fairy tales and the big blue book of fairies, peter pan, and the great illustrated classics for kids.

fubsy · 24/09/2006 22:30

Joolstoo - where did you get Teddy Robinson? I used to love him when I was little and always wanted a proper jointed teddy. Didn't get one til I was about 32 - deprived childhood etc etc....

Books we are keeping include Peepo and EPPP as already mentioned. We also love Slow Loris (DD cracks up at the bit where it takes him an hour to scratch his bottom)and Goodnight Lulu, all the hairy Mclairy and Slinky Malinki books, and anything with Orlando the marmalade cat. Also anything with Charlie and Lola in.

I think there are some amazing picture books around and its quite sad that dd is now moving on to longer books, although now I can introduce her to the ones I loved, like the Narnia books and Paddington (proper ones, not tv tie-ins).

SoMuchToBits · 24/09/2006 22:33

Agree with those of you who have mentioned Little Red Train. Also like Blue Kangaroo books by Emma Chichester Clarke.

Bink · 24/09/2006 22:48

Oh, Teddy Bear Coalman - haven't seen that for 35 years. We used to snigger appallingly over the picture where a brusque stout overalled woman asks him for 2 bags, using the (ever so innocently-drawn) gesture which you can imagine ...

Joolstoo · 25/09/2006 11:59
