I really enjoyed this book, couldn't put it down and couldn't wait to see how it would all pan out in the end - but then found the ending a bit of a disappointment and wasn't sure what to make of it.

Just wondered if anyone else had read it and had any thoughts on it?

Is that the one with the twins?

beautiful book, really naff ending - completely in agreement with you

Read it when it came out, can't remember the ending now but do remember thinking it was a bit meh at the time :)

rosabud · 13/08/2014 22:47

Yes it is the one with the twins. Why did he leave her at the end - was the implication that he had killed himself?? Honestly, I just didn't "get it" at all!

Just finished reading this and also thought the ending was naff. I mean, what was the point of it all for it to end like it did?

Totally agree, the ending was crap! Beautiful writing though. Have you read "The Time Traveller's wife" by her? I adore that book. Similar writing but the ending is nowhere near as disappointing.

Yes, like lots of people, I loved The Time Traveller's Wife (sad ending, but at least a proper ending!)which is why I decided to read this one but was so disappointed.

Do you think he killed himself at the end to become a ghost too and go and find Valentina? I'm over-thinking this, aren't I? Smile I loved the depiction of the relationship between Martin (the agarophobic OCD crossword setter) and Majike, so moving.

Has she written anything else that you've enjoyed?

I read it a while ago and enjoyed it, don't remember being put off or disappointed by the ending

GiantGraspingCeramicFist · 22/08/2014 12:56

I read it a while ago but thought the implication was that he had left after realising that he'd been manipulated and lied to. Which seems reasonable.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 22/08/2014 13:07

I can't remember him leaving (a few years since I read it), but I do remember him being disgusted and appalled at what she'd done.
I suspended disbelief throughout as it was an easy read and quite well-written, but after the ending just thought the whole concept was horrible and wished I hadn't read it.
Happens to me a lot it's why I hardly ever read fiction - Gone Girl, anyone?

BringMeTea · 22/08/2014 14:20

Thought it was terrible. Mind you couldn't even get through Time Traveller. I guess Audrey isn't for me.

juneybean · 22/08/2014 14:26

I enjoyed it but remember reading mixed reviews at the time. I really liked Time Traveller's Wife as well.

GiantGraspingCeramicFist · 22/08/2014 21:24

I thought there were some sections of amazing writing, particularly about grief - some passages moved me to tears - but overall it's not a very good book. The characters were largely unconvincing.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/08/2014 12:28

The ending was utterly ridiculous. I liked Martin but thought most of it was v silly. Liked TTW a lot, except for the foot business and the ending.
