I'm on holiday, I have the worst prickly heat imaginable & I've been inside my apartment all day (blessed air con) For the first time in years, I've read a book in a day, totally gripped from start to finish!
Absolutely blinding!

I've just been and read a load of the one star reviews. It's amazing how many people hate the book, but yet I loved it. Main complaints about it were the fact that the journal reads more like a novel than a journal. Well yes, it does, but if it read like a journal, it would be very tedious to read. I think as readers we have to accept that authors need to use these tools in order to tell a compelling story. You can't expect everything to be absolutely realistic. It is fiction, after all. Readers also complained that it was predictable. Well I didn't guess the twist, not until near the end. But even so, I enjoy books with a twist, and often like to be able to successfully guess it. It is part of the enjoyment for me. For example in 'What Laura Saw', there are two major twists. I guessed one but was completely floored by the other. I wouldn't have thought any less of 'Before I go to sleep' if I'd guessed the twist early on.

Regarding the film, I actually like the casting of Nicole Kidman. I expect they will make her look a bit older for some of the scenes.

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 19:28

Read it 2years ago.loved it really gripping
And no Nicole isn't how I imagine her like this

Northumberland Yes, losing my memory was terrifying. Every time I slept, even if it was just for a few minutes, I woke and thought it was a new day. Felt like I was in ICU for months, and can't believe I beat my elderly friends and relatives to the dementia ward, at the age of 32!

Had forgotten my name, address, where I worked...even that I'd just had another baby. Worst of all though is that I wouldn't believe my Mum had died last year, so feel like I've had to start the grieving process from scratch Sad

Dh has BIGTS on his Kindle so will try to start reading it tonight. More chance of reading a book than getting to the cinema with littlies!

Oh Slinky. That is truly awful. I am so sorry for what you went through.

If you do start reading it, there are a couple of parts which you will find very difficult.

Loved BIGTS, found it really gripping, and well written. Will probably go and see the film, not sure what I think of Nicole in the lead, though...

I've seen the film and I am going to read the book ( when I get off Mumsnet Smile)

Krakken · 07/09/2014 21:34

The book is 89p for the kindle at the moment!
Thanks for the recommendation. I've just bought it and really looking forward to reading it.

Radio 4 had this as their 'Book at Beachtime' last week. It is read by one of the actresses from House of Elliot. I would thoroughly recommend it to those who like audiobooks. Still on the iplayer as far as I know.

I was really disappointed. It started off well, real page turner. Then it got really dull. I skim read to the end just to finish it. I was so disappointed as I was really looking forward to reading it.

imaginative · 08/09/2014 15:03

I can't wait to see the film now.

For those of you who liked Before I Go to Sleep, you may also like 'Watching Over you' by Mel Sherratt and 'What Laura Saw' by Sarah King. Watching Over You is slower moving but has some really graphic sex scenes, and What Laura Saw moves along at a cracking pace and is really spooky!
