Reading around the USA in books- please help me (or even join in!).

I have been inspired by the 'reading around Europe' thread to do the same for the USA.

I am totally hooked on fiction and non fiction that is set in the Deep South or by Southern writers but I so so need to broaden my horizons. I do have quite a few books with connections to other states/by local authors BUT it's be lovely to gather suggestions from all of you which will have the added bonus of lifting me out of my pleasant little self imposed reading rut. The quirkier the better- fiction or non fiction.

I am particularly excited about Hawaii and for extra oomph, will include the US Virgin Islands and Guam too as connected territories (I need the correct term for what these places are to the USA!).

The only genres I really don't like are SciFi and erotica- Fifty Shades type stuff. BUT if you think you have the book to change my mind (maybe erotic S&M on Mars?) then go for it- convince me.

For Colorado, I'd definitely recommend Plainsong and Eventide by Kent Haruf - both set in the same small town in northern Colorado.

Most of Louise Erdrich's novels are set in North Dakota - I read The Round House earlier in the year and LOVED it.

And I've just finished reading a book of interconnected short stories by Julie Hecht, "Happy Trails To You", which are set in Nantucket (Connecticut, I think?)

WorrisomeHeart · 03/08/2014 20:11

Not state specific but my favourite US based non-fiction book is Travels with Charlie by John Steinbeck. And you could take much of his fiction for California..

Lawrence Hill: book of negroes is set around the islands off the coast of West Virginia (I think??) and is v v good!

lljkk · 04/08/2014 12:25

The Highest Tide, Jim Lynch, Pacific NorthWest.

Dawn Patrol, by Don Winslow. It looks like just another SoCal crime mystery but it's full of local culture & specific local history.

The Memory of Running, Ron McLarty is a good cross country journey.

LornaGoon · 04/08/2014 20:03

For a bit of poetry, try Emily Dickinson (Amherst, Massachusetts). She was a bit of a hermit but still get a sense of time and place.
New Mexico, Laguna Peublo: Leslie Marmon Silko's 'Ceremony'. And 'the almanac of the dead' by sicko for Arizona.

Zen and the art of motorcycling - covers Minnesota to North Carolina.
The Colour Purple - mostly set in Georgia.

7Days · 05/08/2014 17:05

The Secret History is Vermont I think

Wally Lamb is another option for Connecticut

Takver · 05/08/2014 17:39

I'm going to suggest mainly children's books.

Laura Ingalls Wilder, little house series, start off in Wisconsin, move across Kansas, end up in N Dakota.

The Katy stories, ending with The high valley, going from Ohio to Colorado.

Little women etc Massachusetts, but some bits out west with Dan in prison.

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Connecticut or some such.

The children of the Oregon trail, as on tin to California. Non pc warning.

Stuart Little NY, also Wilder's Farmer Boy, and Kate Seredy The Open Gate

Frances Parkinson Keyes Queen Anne's Lace, Washington DC.

Jean Webster Daddy Long Legs, NY state plus the Adiirondacks

Oregon my Friend Flicka

Benjamin Franklin autobiography Pennsylvania

Don't forget Henry James....

And watch the bog bang theory...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/08/2014 22:17

I adore, 'Daddy Long Legs.' One of my very, very favourite books. :)

SconeRhymesWithGone · 05/08/2014 22:18

Another one for Florida: Queen of the Underworld by Gail Godwin

SconeRhymesWithGone · 05/08/2014 22:21

South Carolina:

The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd
Prince of Tides, Pat Conroy
Bastard Out of Carolina, Dorothy Allison

Nessalina · 05/08/2014 22:33

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck begins in Oklahoma.

I'd also second Stephen King for Maine - IT or 'Salem's Lot are classics.

Bill Bryson is from Des Moines, Iowa, and his memoir The Life & Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is set there.

I believe a few of the Jodi Picoult novels are set in New Hampshire?

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 05/08/2014 22:56

I think if you are going to have a Steven King book for one of them, you should have it for Maine, it is very much his home turf. Maybe 'It' if you haven't read it, or if you have, 11/22/63.

Wiki has the full list, for that is what it does

mignonette · 05/08/2014 23:03

Ancient

I like the idea of including kids books and in fact, that would make a lovely and separate section too.

Scone I wondered if you'd come here and suggest some SC books. Thank you.
