Sort Of books are publishing a Winter Book which contains 15 - or was it 13? - of the stories from Sculptor's Daughter plus 5 previously unpublished stories. It will be available in early November. YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(And Yah Boo Sucks to the person trying to sell Sculptor's Daughter on ebay for £850!)
And now to rush upstairs with loose-bottomed dd2 who has just been making worrying and lengthy burbling noises in my lap...)

ah damn, you've guessed!

TooTicky · 15/09/2006 21:37

or Plopp... or what is that caramel one called? I remember the children liked it.

don't remember that one

might have been in norway. did you do norway?

TooTicky · 15/09/2006 21:41

Did Norway briefly YEARS ago... I remember the jellyfish, and the Oslo-Bergen train journey, and a funicular somewhere... my soul yearns for Sweden, although recently I have had feelings for Austria and I've never been there.

Austria...hmmm...I found it pretty boring, actually...dunno...

oddly, what I would really like to go back to is the modern art museum in stockholm...did you do the open air museums?

Who is Nils Holgersson btw?

(am curious as to this swedish name of your dd's...it doesn't begin with F, does it? (don't say if you'd rather not))

TooTicky · 15/09/2006 21:54

The previous year, we went to an open air museum in Broby which was cool. Oh, and the Brio museum in Osby, not open air but just so wonderful for young children! Lots to play with and they even had dairy free ice cream for me
Nils Holgersson? The Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgersson by Selma Lagerlof - classic Swedish reading - originally written for schools but v. popular.
Aah, my dd1's name begins with F, in a goddessy kind of way. Dd2 is an R, like the daughter of a robber....
Now, your dd, not Maribou, surely?

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 15/09/2006 22:00

ah yes..

yes, i have a goddessy F too. It is a Norwegian chocolate brand. Thats kind of why she was called that . Well it seemed apt. And now, it doesn't.

Did you go to Skansen?

God there's loads to do, isn't there? How did you get around?

What I do remember is quite a lot of smoking...? Oh but also-free bicycles...

how did the 2 yo cope? Am thinking next summer when goddessy dd is 2...

TooTicky · 15/09/2006 22:09

We haven't been to Stockholm yet - we were going to last year until I came over all sensible and decided that we couldn't afford it
We went by car (dp can't manage without one - mutter mutter).
Ds2 coped fine - he's quite an adaptable little chap and most of the things we did were very child-friendly.
This conversation lark is really addictive but I must go as I am being a Bad And Neglectful Mother - poor little ds2 saying, "Come on mama, it's bedtime, you're making me crazy!" and dd2 sleeping across my lap in what I suspect is a damp nappy. . Dd1 and ds1 have given up on me altogether...

Hello you Scandinavian types! (Are you Swedish/Norwegian/Finnish, or just in love with these places - or both?!)

TT, no I haven't come across Astrid Lindgren before...off to google, as I don't know anything about her/it.

sancerre · 16/09/2006 09:22

ahhh, Pippi Longstocking! Vague memories of this from childhood, worth revisiting do you think??
Moomins have all been reread recently and I'm just captivated by them

FrannyandZooey · 16/09/2006 09:23

Hey this is great news Tooticky, thanks for letting us know

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 16/09/2006 11:33

hej, franny! Nice to see you back! Meant to send you correct email and have somehow not...will do...

I have no connection whatsohever to scandianvia. I just really like it. I think its the cool light and the forests and the moose and the cloudberries and the outdoorsness and Lukas Moodyson and Ingmar Bergman and the fabulous welfare state and the norse pantheon and the trees and their coffee and some other things.

oh, I want to go back. tt I am going to pester you for more information when you're next here.

TooTicky · 16/09/2006 17:18

I'm not Scandinavian, just gently obsessed...
Sancerre, DEFINITELY investigate Astrid Lindgren, she has written lots. Pippi obviously, but don't miss Karlsson (a little man with a propellor on his back), Emil (a naughty little boy), the Brothers Lionheart (superbly magical!), Ronja the Robber's Daughter (lovely!) and lots more.
Btw, all credit for finding out about the Winter Book goes to my mother who had the good sense to 'phone Sort Of books.
