I am a nightmare for not finishing books. I'm probably a quarter of the way through this and I'm finding it an effort. Is it worth continuing?

J k Rowling

Oh, I loved it! But honestly, if you're not feeling it then move onto something else. Everyone told me I'd love Kate Mosse; I got two chapters into Labyrinth before deciding it was best used as a doorstop.

RelocatorRelocator · 22/07/2014 21:06

I gritted my teeth to get through it and no it didn't improve. I hated it! At the end I thought well that's several hours of my life I won't get back.

It was a present from the dcs so I felt like I had to read it though!

Laquila · 22/07/2014 21:11

I was the same and gave up! Loved her Robert Galbraith book though! There's a new one out now, not read it but not as well reviewed.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/07/2014 21:14

I haven't been able to bring myself to try it. The first Galbraith one was really good but the second was turgid.

OhMyArsingGodInABox · 22/07/2014 21:15

I get halfway through it. I actually google the ending because it had a hunch and then thought, nope. Didn't bother finishing it and glad I didn't.

Sorry Jk. But there you go.

OhMyArsingGodInABox · 22/07/2014 21:16

God my phone hates me.

I actually googled the ending because I had a hunch.

Southeastdweller · 22/07/2014 21:21

I loved it. Difficult to keep track of the many characters and the size of it can feel intimidating but it's one of the funniest (and saddest) books I've read for years. She certainly paints a very good picture of the U.K as it is now.

vincentaroony · 22/07/2014 21:23

I found the characters too cringey and the plot slow - gave up about halfway through (and I am normally very good at finishing books). My mum read it and really enjoyed it though. Pass it on to someone else and move on to something you'll enjoy!

OverAndAbove · 22/07/2014 21:26

I loved it; the various intertwined stories were very well drawn and I agree with the pp that it is so observational about how things are in this country. It's clever.

YoHoHoandabottleofWine · 22/07/2014 21:27

It has stayed with me, which I think is the mark of a book that is worthwhile reading. I think it gets better. Give it a couple more chapters?

There are certain turns of phrase that are very JK Rowling though that drive me crazy.

Hatetidyingthehouse · 22/07/2014 21:34

Yes. I've just read a whole chapter and I haven't a clue who anyone is! I will continue. For now.
Have been naughty and started another book though. Gone girl. Gillian Flynn. Which I'm finding to be an easy read

Gone Girl, loved it.

Galaxymum · 23/07/2014 11:32

I loved this book. I experience life in a village through school, and I think JK Rowling grasps the typical personalities. I was in awe of the way she could convey how characters reacted and behaved when with different people. I was shocked at bad reviews really - she manages a large cast and sensitive plot so well. It is a book that stayed with me and I found it hard to follow on with anything that engaged me as well.

But books are like marmite - not everyone can love a book.

DuchessofMalfi · 23/07/2014 11:44

Agree with you Galaxy. I couldn't put it down, was gripped by it.

Southeastdweller · 23/07/2014 15:19

Very much agree with the comments about this book staying power; for me it's because I recognised so much of the characters, situations, sub-plots and themes, all intertwined so adeptly.

carlajean · 23/07/2014 21:09

If you hate it now,it's not going to improve. I've found that people love or hate it. I thought it was dreadful.

DameEdnasBridesmaid · 24/07/2014 22:13

I loved it and I love her Cormoran Strike books. The first is the better than the The Silkworm, but hoping for an constant supply.

Diorella · 24/07/2014 22:15

oh dear, is the second RG book turgid? I've just bought it. I'm going to start it when I've finished Emma Donohoe's "the sealed letter" (vg)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/07/2014 22:20

Dior - 'fraid so. I hated it but loved the first one; dp felt exactly the same.

wanttosinglikemarycoughlan · 24/07/2014 22:21

I loved it but it is a grim read
I didn't actually like any of the characters which usually puts me off but it wasn't a drag to read at all

DameEdnasBridesmaid · 24/07/2014 22:56

Agree with wanttosing I didn't much care for any of the characters (except for Cormoran and Robin). Still liked it - just not as much as the first.

I love how she writes loved Harry Potter but I'm a grown up now
