Starts on TV in a few minutes. Should I watch it or save myself for the book? Only recently discovered Sarah Waters.

I've seen it before and just watched it again,I think I'll read the book apparently the drama didn't do it justice.

I loved the book, I thought it was one of her best ones.

My sister loved the book so I thought I'd save myself in case of any denouement. bluebump it's next on my list, read Fingersmith a few months ago and loved it, very excited to have a new writer to explore.

I thought this about the Alistair MacLean books when I opened it Blush

I loved the book. Wish they'd given the TV version more time as there was more plot they could have put in. Great cast. Looking forward to Sarah Waters new one in autumn.

I hated the book, but haven't seen the TV version. There wasn't a single character I cared a jot about, iirc. This was the book that made me vow never to read another one of hers.

Clawdy · 20/07/2014 20:44

Read the book first,it's a wonderful evocative read...

paulapantsdown · 20/07/2014 20:50

I loved the book so much, the tv adaption was so poor it made me sad!

Southeastdweller · 06/04/2015 22:15

Bought this in a charity shop last week but not started it yet. I loved The Paying Guests but found Fingersmith tiresome (apart from the big twist).

Any other opinions?

Clawdy · 08/04/2015 18:59

I thought The Night Watch was brilliant and also loved The Little Stranger. I was disappointed with The Paying Guest, though, just didn't work for me.

I read it recently - mixed feelings. As has been said above, very evocative. And as has also been said above, none of the characters are very likeable.

It's got a brittleness to it that I found rather difficult - it took me ages to read it. When I finished it I could appreciate that I had read something good, but would never be able to describe that 'good' as enjoyable.

Southeastdweller · 23/04/2015 07:32

I finished it yesterday. It's very bleak but very atmospheric with generally excellent characterisation and the period detail felt credible (I've read she researches her books for months, sometimes even years). I wish the characters of Julia and Helen had been fleshed-out a little more and it wasn't quite the page-turner that The Paying Guests was but I would very much recommend it.

I've yet to watch the TV adaptation (available on iTunes) but can't imagine 90 minutes will do the book justice.

tormentil, I agree it was brittle. I didn't particularly enjoy it and like Remus did not like any of the characters. I thought the TV version was very watchable, some good acting but some story story arcs were changed. I did enjoy the Paying Guests (but not the ending). I really want to love Waters books but never really do.
