I've just finished The voices by f. R. Tallis. It was a bit meh....it had a few good chills but to be honest it just didn't deliver the goods Sad

Does anyone out there in MN world have any suggestions? Ideally I want a book(s) that is going to scare the living bejesus out of me :-)

Please and thank you

It's very strange stuff, and quite badly written in many ways, but have you read anything by H.P. Lovecraft? Argh!

I've just this minute finished heart shaped box....I can't decide what I think of it. There were parts that I thought were very well written with a lot of suspense and others that I just wanted to skip through. I've also got horns by Joe Hill.

I've not read any lovecraft. I wouldn't mind giving a go though.

Fg cotton the waiting room is also excellent.
Have you read let the right one in? That's good too.

I have seed if you want me to post over to you. Alas I don't have any others.

You're making me want to read a good horror!

Flesh and Blood by Graham Masterton. It makes me shudder just thinking of it.

Thanks everyone Smile you've all suggested authors I've not heard of before so I'm now on the hunt!

Burgatroyd has recommended two of my favourites, FG Cottam and John Ajvide Lundqvist are both excellent.

Adam Nevill is good, The Ritual and Last Days are the two I would recommend of his.

Graham Masterson's Manitou series is excellent, I loved it.

You might like Night Film by Marisha Pessl. It's not horror exactly, but it's odd and creepy and very good. And it has illustrations.

And perhaps The Girl With All The Gifts by MR Carey would be one you might enjoy.

I found Dark Matter by Michelle Paver to be one of the scariest books I've read in a long time. A compelling, but spine tingling read. Her other books are aimed at young adults, but this one is definitely for a grown-up audience!

Susan Hill is supposed to be very good at scary stories. I haven't read any though. I've recently been recommended Dolly by her and I think that's going to be one of my next Reads. That was recommended to me when I was talking about books which you shouldn't read if you're in the house on your own with some people from work.

I second FG Cottam but I'd recommend The House of Lost Souls. Very atmospheric and one of the scariest books I'd read in a long time.

Also Graham Masterton as a pp has said, but my favourite book of his is Mirror.
