Cyril Hare anybody?

Not quite sure how I stumbled upon Cyril but I enjoyed reading his books. They're murder/mystery novels set between the 30's - 50's, and very much of their time. Cyril himself was a judge and one of his main characters is a barrister - I'd say he writes in quite a verbose, yet not boring, manner, but can quite see he wouldn't appeal to a lot of people. Does anyone know of writers similar in style?

I read him years ago and remember liking the books, but I can't remember any details. I will need to re-read some.

I used to read Margery Alligham books, at the same time as I was reading Cyril Hare, although I seem to remember Allingham is a much lighter read. You might try Dorothy L Sayers as well, but Im not sure that they are at all the same.

I read 'With A Bare Bodkin' and liked it very much.
Have you tried Ngaio Marsh, another 30s-50s thriller writer (Surfeit of Lampreys is her most famous), and perhaps Georges Simenon?

Here's a good list of British Golden Age Detective novelists.
