My book group read The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey niffenegger and we all loved it.

FillyjonktheFluffy · 07/09/2006 21:28

FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 07:23

Medulla · 08/09/2006 07:27

Shadow of the Wind - fantastic

christie1 · 10/09/2006 01:30

the red tent-my mom read it. Some sisterhood (think chinese but not sure) where women enter tent to experience lifes female rituals. NOt my cup of tea but it is well reviewed and anyone I know who read it, loved it.

Miaou · 10/09/2006 07:17

haha, was just going to recommend Never Let me Go, I see I was beaten to it!

Also The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood. Very good, similar subject area.

MrsSpoon · 11/09/2006 14:53

My favourites recently have been Never Let Me Go, Short History of Tractors in Ukranian and We Need to Talk About Kevin. My favourite book of the last few years (and possibly of all time) has to be Life of Pi.

Seconding 2 books already mentioned:

wind up bird chronicle - murakami (and most murakamis) kind of dream-like and mysterious.

life of pi is excellent too.

I agree with all of MrsSpoon's choices, especially the Short History of Tractors.. which sounds and looksd unapealing from it's cover but is actually excellent, both funny and moving. I have just read Sleep with me by Joanne Briscoe and it is also good, if you liked Enduring Love by Ian McEwan then you would like this.

mamamaaargh · 02/10/2006 22:17

I second the Short History of Tractors... - very easy to read, funny and quite touching.

I read the red tent a couple of years ago and to my surprise, really enjoyed it. It is a sisterhood thing, but based on biblical characters & stories. Lots about women's rites of passage, life experiences, pregnancy, childbirth & female rituals.

Alexander McCall SMith (#1 Ladies detective agency) is an easy read too, although a bit dull sometimes. Then of course, there are things like Marian Keyes which, to me, are great plane/ holiday reads.

taffy101 · 02/10/2006 22:24

life of pi and time traveller's wife both fantastic. Also anything by maggie o'farrell

maggiesmama · 02/10/2006 22:26

poisonwood bible, by kingsolver is fantastic

avoid on beauty my zadie smith, if i were you, its really not very good.

prince · 02/10/2006 22:54

Have you read any of Stephen Koontz they are sort of horror cum sci fi come fantasy, very readable
