I want a gripping, unputdownable crime thriller. Eg, girl with dragon tattoo before we realised it was actually a bit rubbish. I love Elmore Leonard, especially for the dialogue and Barbara vine for the suspense.

I recommend the Britt Montero series by Florida writer Edna Buchanan. They are mostly set in Miami.

P. D. James all the way. Her early novels were brilliant and spine chilling. Try 'Unnatural Causes' - fairly short but will give you a great taste of her style.

Interesting that you enjoy Barbara Vine but not Ruth Rendell Grin

I love crime fiction and am a fan of American authors particularly. I didn't enjoy Chelsea Cain but am a fan of John Sandford, Jeffrey Deaver, Karin Slaughter and Richard Montanari.

I have read a couple of Stuart MacBride's which I liked. Speaking of the "Tartan Noir" genre, Denise Mina is very good.

Kathy Reichs, Karen Slaughter. Both have series, both good writers, easy to read, leave you wanting to get hold of the next one.

My favorite PD James is, and forever will be, Shroud for a Nightingale. One of my most treasured possessions is an inscribed copy a friend got for me at a book signing in London years ago.

I really do need to read Karin Slaughter, especially since I grew up in a small town in Georgia similar to the setting of some of her books.

BlushBlushBlushBlushBlushBlush When I wrote Barbara vine, my brain was thinking minette Walters. What can I say?

I tried pd James as a kid when I ran out of agatha Christies. Bit of a reach back then, will investigate now.

Elizabeth Haynes
Lisa Cutts
Nina De La Mer
Mel Sherratt
Sheila Quigley.

Why do women so often write better crime than men? (Present company excluded of course...) :)
