I have never read any Bill Bryson books before but would like to give one a go.
Which one should I read first?

They're all good aren't they? Neither Here Nor There is my favourite I think because it brought back fond memories of travelling/inter-railing round Europe (anyone remember that?!)

My favourite quote from BB is:

Bradford's role in life is to make every other town and city look much better.

And it does this very well.

Love that quote from BrianButterfield.

If you read on, he apologises profusely for his rudeness and feels very ashamed the next morning, bless him.

A Brief History of Nearly Everything is wonderful, but I like them all, only one I couldn't get into was the shakespeare one.

I love his books but I can't seem to get into his latest One Summer 1927. Tbf I'm only upto chapter 3 so it might get better but I got it at Xmas and usually finish his books a lot quicker than this ! I think I'll try again this week, I'd forgotten all about it!

Oh, yes, 'One Summer' was a bit of a an effort, I'd forgotten about that. I enjoyed the aviation stuff, but not the baseball so much.

We drive 6 plus hours regularly to visit family and when my kids were younger we listened to A Walk in the Woods book tape and also A Short History of Nearly Everything. The kids (and us) were gripped the whole time Bill Bryson is such a good writer we also listen to Terry Pratchett books, odd but wonderful.

Another one who loves his travel writing - haven't read his other stuff, history etc, but am now inspired to buy the audio versions - his in the only 'comic' writing that actually makes me laugh

I remember the very first time I read BB. It was an article in a sunday newspaper I'd picked up in the pub.

“Among the many thousands of things that I have never been able to understand, one in particular stands out. That is the question of who was the first person who stood by a pile of sand and said, "You know, I bet if we took some of this and mixed it with a little potash and heated it, we could make a material that would be solid and yet transparent. We could call it glass." Call me obtuse, but you could stand me on a beach till the end of time and never would it occur to me to try to make it into windows.”

I've read several of them several times. They are easy to pick up and put down again between other books.

Made in America and the Mother tongue are also informative and fun.

A Short History of Nearly Everything, if it's the one I'm thinking of, is more about people than the science.
