We're giving away 50 copies of Marriage Material by Sathnam Sanghera. It’s an epic tale of family, love, and politics spanning the 20th century. Told with humour, tenderness and insight by one of Britain's most promising young writers, it was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award and longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize.

To Arjan Banga, returning to the Black Country after the unexpected death of his father, his family's corner shop represents everything he has tried to leave behind – a lethargic pace of life, insular rituals and ways of thinking. But when his mother insists on keeping the shop open, he finds himself being dragged back, forced into big decisions about his imminent marriage back in London and uncovering the history of his broken family – the betrayals and loyalties, loves and regrets that played out in the shop over more than fifty years.

Click here if you’d like to read an extract of the book, or apply for a free copy now. We will post on the thread once all the copies have gone.

Received my copy a while back but I've just started reading this.
Will post more as I get going.

Fabulous. Thoroughly enjoyed this. It was a real insight into the Asian culture within Britain. I really liked it when all the clues fell into place, a few good 'aha!' moments.

Only just started reading my copy (thank you!) but I love it already. I feel drawn into the story because the writing is so evocative. I think I'm going to really enjoy this.

Finished this a few days ago and loved it! Thank you!

I not only loved the story (which was very well written and totally believable) but I learnt a lot too.

Will be passing it on to friends.

I was lucky enough to receive a free copy of this book and I have to say I am thoroughly enjoying it and when my darling daughter (6 months) gives me a few minutes of my own I am eager to dive back into it...
...I will post a full review for you all once I have finished it.

I am finally really getting into this. Not quite finished, but it as has been quite a slow start but now looking forward to finding out how it ends. Will post a review when done.

I really enjoyed this novel and intend to read the author's other works. I liked the intertwining of the modern day and historical stories. It didn't read like a first novel. Having read numerous works by Zadie Smith and Hanif Kureishi it was interesting to read a novel covering similar subject matter but set in the West Midlands rather than London or Bradford.
