Just saw her obituary in our local newspaper. She died last Friday aged 97. Her version of the Merlin/King Arthur story is my favourite one. I had no idea I lived only about 20 miles away from her.

I love her books. I was only recommending The Ivy Tree to my niece a couple of days ago. I didn't realise she was still alive actually. I think she's greatly underrated as a writer.

I loved Airs above the Ground and Madam will You Talk - will reread them (again) as a tribute!

NigellasGuest · 20/05/2014 23:14

I didn't know she wrote adult fiction.... what I remember is The Little Broomstick!

Good Lord, I had no idea she was still alive. Loved her books as a young teenager. Of their time but a cracking good read.

I loved her books as a teenager too. In fact I confess I bought them again a couple of years ago in a set from the book people...

Loved all those thrillers with exotic settings esp. Madam Will you Talk. V good heroines, esp. for their time. Agree with Imperial Blether v under-rated. Still have my mothers MWYT, will now look out for the others.

Airs Above the Ground is my all-time favourite comfort read. I still cry at the end...
A fantastic writer and yes, very under-rated these days.

Another person who didn't realise that she was still alive.
It has been a long time since I read her books - I must have read them all several times over!

So strange . This is on my coffee table . It's been there 3 days . I asked DH if he had taken it from the book shelf and he said no. Small DGS must have chosen it. I was planning to read it again so left it out .
Many happy hours reading her books. I think The Gabriel Hounds" was one of my favourites .

:( I just saw this :(
Ludo and the Star Horse is one of my favourite books of all time, I can practically recite the whole thing, I've read it so often.

Mary Stewart was featured in Radio 4's obituary programme, Last Word, yesterday. Was interesting.

Seeing that book cover just took me back to being 11 again - in a flash.

BellsaRinging · 24/05/2014 08:34

I loved her books as a teenager, and only got madam will you talk on the kindle the other day for holiday. she was a really good writer.

There is a nice obituary in the Guardian as well. I love the story how she first met her husband.
