Just finished this beautiful, astonishing, heart-breaking, overall bloody stupendous book (nooooooo!)

Here's what I've got to choose from to read next:

The Rosie Project

Apple tree Yard

Sisterland

What Alice Forgot

In the Blood by Lisa Unger

What do you think?

Tia

I read it at Christmas, and nothing has come close since. Which doesn't help your dilemma!

BaconAndAvocado · 11/05/2014 22:47

No it doesn't agent but nice to meet another reader with superb taste Smile

Well I didn't love it quite as much as you (loved the first 3/4, really not impressed with the last 1/4), but other recent reads which have left big impressions include Burial Rites by Hannah Kent, The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout, A Possible Life by Sebastian Faulks.

I am currently reading and loving The Truth About The Harry Quebert by Joel Dicker. It's fat, and quite stylised; a mystery told through different viewpoints and sources (sort of) with lots of twists...I think it's good anyway. Am only 3/4 way through, though; it may yet do a Goldfinch on me!

HmmAnOxfordComma · 12/05/2014 18:25

Oh, slightly misread your OP. You wanted one picking from your list?

Of the ones of yours I've read, I'd recommend The RosieProject.

rubyslippers · 12/05/2014 18:26

I love the Goldfinch - it's there in my top ten ever

Highly recommend Tiny Sunburds Far Away

rubyslippers · 12/05/2014 18:26

Sunbirds - I can spell Blush

MrsMcEnroe · 12/05/2014 18:32

I preferred Donna Tartt's first two books, have you read those?

NiceOneCenturion · 12/05/2014 19:17

Sorry I don't know any from your list, but I've been between books for ages (4 month old baby) and you've made me decide to start The Goldfinch, so thank you for this post!

I have heard good things about The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton and have that waiting on the kindle too.

AgentProvocateur · 12/05/2014 19:31

It's not on your list, but if you want another astonishing heart-breaking bloody stupendous book, I urge you to buy A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry.

BaconAndAvocado · 12/05/2014 19:40

Ooh yes agent have been recommended a Fine Balance before. Will seek it out.

mrsmcenroe I read the Secret History which I adored but didn't fancy the Little Friend (thought the subject matter sounded a bit bleak?)

Will definitely have a look at all the above mentioned books tonight on amazon.......cup of tea and a gander on amazon, my idea of a good night Smile

Keep the suggestions coming please!

I read this over Easter and haven't been able to get into anything else since, so lurking with interest!

Dirtymistress · 12/05/2014 19:43

Try Benediction by Kent Haruf. I cannot think of another writer who moves me in the way that he does.

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 12/05/2014 19:47

Two completely different books I've recently loved are Blue Eyed Boy by Joanne Harris and My Dear, I Wanted to Tell You.

LackaDAISYcal · 12/05/2014 19:53

Have you read her other books?

The Magus by John Fowles is on my top ten of "go to" re-reads.

Or the alternative is to read something a little more grounded and easy on the brain, which I did, and am now re-reading The Secret History. I really hope she doesn't wait another 1o years for her next novel!

BaconAndAvocado · 12/05/2014 20:35

Me too lacka !
