What do you recommend for intelligent but not too taxing holiday reading this year? It's a 2 week beach holiday - with a toddler, but I'm STILL hoping to get a little bit of reading in!

Behind the scenes at the museum by Kate Atkinson.

It's funny and interesting and totally unique.

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

A japanese love story. Incredibly sad, touching and erotic!

Brilliant book.

Ulysees · 28/08/2006 19:14

Oooh I like the sound of that Norwegian Wood. I read Linda Pearce ....A lesser evil whilst on hols. I couldn't put it down but there's some pretty taxing bits in it. Got a bit of a to be honest!

Ulysees · 28/08/2006 19:15

or is it Lesley pearce? Anyway, good but a bit near the knuckle.

The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (not sure i've spelt that right) A beautiful but unusual love story.

I'd second MarsLady - in fact I think all Haruki Murakami are great, especially if you like a bit of odd-ness thrown in! I would really recommend 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle' or 'Kafka on the Shore' too. Or Zadie Smith 'On Beauty' is ok is you want something a bit lighter. Am currently reading Amy Tan 'Saving fish from drowning' which seems good so far...

Hi not sure if this is allowed but I have just put some chick lit/easy read books on ebay! Very cheap here

Highly recommend Julie and Julia by can't remember the author. It was fantastic and if you like food you'll love it. Its by a secretary in New York who starts a blog about cooking everything from Julia Childs "mastering the art of French cooking". The book follows the highly successful blog. It is so funny and foodie and has lots of images of New York and hunting for lobsters.

If you google it or type it into Amazon you'll find it.

Anything by Tim Moore (travel writing)
Hilarious

'Behind the scenes' is brilliant.

aDAdOnMumsnet · 29/08/2006 15:59

Murakami good but quite strange and often long!

Zadie Smith's On Beauty I found enjoyable and not too taxing. Also thought Ian McEwan's Saturday was brilliantly written but not a heavy read, except for a couple of detailed passages about brain surgery!

Loved Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian and wished I had saved it as a holiday read, it felt like a holiday book IYKWIM.

Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld - I loved it and managed to read on holiday with my 2 year old.
