This has probably been mentioned numerous times before, but books are so lovely, to kids, to us -

I love being able to turn off the tv and read to the kids, and when their asleep pick up a book and in quiet read a brilliant story from pages I can turn - even the feel of a book I love - marking a page, everything!

How awful it would be to put this all online, or am I wrong?

I find myself agreeing with scottishmummy

Which is not a common occurrence. :)

scottishmummy · 02/05/2014 23:59

I love print books.i love my kindle.both deliver mode to read book

oopsadaisyme · 03/05/2014 00:03

lol, okay -

I happen to spend alot of time 'online' - and as I said I don't knock anyone reading anything in any format -

I just happen to love reading a book, offline, from pages -

You can stop attacking me if you want, only my personal opinion, not being 'pompous', just what I think -

Oh, we don't do discussions on mn these days: just do a quick wazz of bad feeling and bile at anyone who can't actually physically respond.

I blame AIBU, frankly. And alcohol, boredom and lack of social skills.

scottishmummy · 03/05/2014 00:06

Youre not being attacked,im exploring your points eg electronic shit.it was pompous
Have you considered one can like books, and kindle.theyre not in competition
Youre peddling notion that books are higher minded, and kindles fir the proles

thegambler · 03/05/2014 00:08

Just been looking at how to loan an e-book to a friend. Nah not for me. I'm not a luddite, I love my streaming music and still listen to vinyl but until it's easier to swap books, kindles become strong enough to stand up to my work bag then I'll stick to paper.

scottishmummy · 03/05/2014 00:09

Is mn electronic shit, cant thumb the pages,or physically bookmark it

oopsadaisyme · 03/05/2014 00:11

thecat thanks x

Seriously, this thread could have turned into an interesting discussion - debating whether electronic based forms have the physical longevity of previous forms; or the Amazon monopoly; whether an electronic form you can read in the bath can be safely developed - and instead it's as flat as a pancake. It's vituperation unleavened by wit, insight or a desire to communicate: just the desire to leave a small yowl of the self streaked across the void - like a pool of piss at the bottom of a deserted stairwell.

The thread isn't even in AIBU or Chat: it's in Adult Fiction. Nowhere is safe from the march of the AIBU knee-jerk nastiness.

scottishmummy · 03/05/2014 00:14

The suggestion is kindle is electronic shit, and don't loose print.yes its interesting
That doesnt mean tippy toe around op,and make sure we all concur
Its a v legitimate topic,so yes lets duscuss

oopsadaisyme · 03/05/2014 00:16

thecat I think maybe you need to put that in simpler forms for a varied audience -

I loathe books, newfangled usurpers of the scroll they are. Scrolls are the proper way to read.

morethanpotatoprints · 03/05/2014 00:17

I read books and not much online tbh.
I also find it hard to follow the print on kindles and much prefer books.
My dc all read books too, and over the years we have acquired a well stocked library.
Maybe off topic but I was only thinking last night that with modern technology most furniture will be obsolete in a few years.
Who has a phone table in their hall anymore? How long will people have cupboards or shelves for dvds, cds etc? Bookcases anyone?
I don't think one is better though, its each to their own and also agree, you can do both.
I do think it will be sad if people stop reading books altogether and only read on kindle etc.

scottishmummy · 03/05/2014 00:17

You didn't understand it?i understand,just dont concur

BurdenedWithGloriousPurpose · 03/05/2014 00:18

thecat, I read my kindle in the bath all the time. Just pop it into a ziplock freezer bag.

I'm still traumatized by the time I dropped my 3 in 1 giant Mallory Towers book in the bath. Crinkly pages just aren't the same.

thegambler · 03/05/2014 00:18

I thought the other poster mentioned "electronic shit" as in "all the electronic shit" ie all the screens we spend our lives addicted to and I agree to a point. I struggle to read long treatisies on the lap top or phone and my mam's kindle, a problem I don't have with paper.

oopsadaisyme · 03/05/2014 00:19

I do have a kindle, just like books for reading -

Bye

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 03/05/2014 00:21

There seems to be an assumption of false dichotomy.books,worthy.kindle not
Its possible to have and enjoy both media.a book as physical object isn't more worthy
The content, emotion,in a novel are important not how its delivered

HeartShapedStone · 03/05/2014 00:21

I don't understand why I didn't give stuff about transferring CD's to digital and binning all of the originals, but I can't bear the thought of binning all my (dust gathering, space taking) books. I like to think it's that a lot of them I'd have to pay for, a lack of putting into a drive and converting, but I fear it's all sentimentality (and a worry about what would happen to a kindle with my love of reading in the bath).

thegambler · 03/05/2014 00:22

People are saying which they prefer, that's all.

pebblyshit · 03/05/2014 00:22

I don't get the sniffing and rubbing of books personally. I like books for the stories, not the texture of the page and they smell of nothing. However, I don't think kindles work for some things (poetry or kids books or something where you want to keep looking at certain passages) and I find it hard to skip about on a kindle and sometimes wish it was a real book. The disadvantages are knocked into a cocked hat by the convenience of being able to carry a shit load of books with you and not have your whole house cluttered up. I miss being able to nosy at what everyone else is reading in public though.

HeartShapedStone · 03/05/2014 00:24

And I am so slow typing I didn't realise the bath/kindle/ zip-lock solution was already available.

HoneyDragon · 03/05/2014 00:25

Book sales only briefly surged as a direct result of anonline fan fic.

The decline in book sales and increases in rebook sales would probably indicate the move is welcomed rather than awful.

thegambler · 03/05/2014 00:27

Why do you want to carry a shit load of books around with you ? and I regularly book cull. There are few books I'll re-read so I just keep the reference stuff really.

BurdenedWithGloriousPurpose · 03/05/2014 00:29

I know people like real books as they like to share them.

BUT PEOPLE CANT BE TRUSTED WITH PAPER BOOKS.

Sorry, had to shout that. They return books with creases and folded corners and if lent to my sister they are returned reeking of cigarette smoke.

Now I can't lend my books. It's hard to say no when it's a paper one but now I can just lament with them that I bought it on kindle. Which is a lie. I LOVE not loaning books.

I know I said I wasn't a sniffer/stroker but I'm still a bit precious about the condition of my paper books. Blush
