Spooky! I just finished it last night (was ill in bed, so read it all in one go). I thought it was mildly interesting, but not particularly well written, found the way she went on about her children really annoying, and it was all just too "and then this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened" for me.

Also thought the end was just too cheesy for words.

orangegiraffe · 25/08/2006 08:39

I thought the same, defo cheesy ending, she made such a martyr of herself for doing what she did. I bit exagurated if you ask me.

Just finished this book. REally didn't like the woman - 'I just couldn't bring myself to buy 2nd hand clothes for my children or send them to oiky state school so I decided to have sex with 20 people a week to earn enough wonga so that little Fenella could go to pony lessons and I could afford to run a huge 4x4 etc etc...'

Mind you I did read it all in one go.

I agree, couldn't raise much sympathy for her position. Seemed poor reasons for becoming a whore!

Oh blimey, don't get me started - this is my latest book club book.

It's sooooo badly written I really struggled to get past that.

HATED the fact that she presented herself constantly as this perfect mother/housewife - despite having been up shagging all night, she couldn't let herself go to sleep without clearing the breakfast things - barf... Had NO sympathy for the stupid bint - at the risk of sounding like a complete fascist wanted her to STOP HAVING KIDS (& puppies) when she was getting deeper & deeper into debt.

Thought it was a missed opportunity - absolutely no emotional depth - eg I wanted to know how her friends reacted when they told her (not just 'she didn't judge me'). And, perhpas due to her childhood, thought she actualy didn't interogate what the sex meant - for her/the men.

A complete waste of my reading time, if it wasn't for the fact that I like a good rant...

And only saving grace was that its a bloomin' fast read.

Had no sympathy for her at all she really annoyed me with her so called need to "work" o pay school fees, cars, big house etc

I read this just after I read the one about the Australian prostitute/ heroin addict can't remember what it was called but much better read.

I know this is resurrecting an old thread, but I have just read this as a book club read (which I recommended ) and thought it was probably one of the worst books I have ever read. The woman had no depth, no style (literary or otherwise), I could have slapped her every time she put herself on a pedestal as a model of motherhood, was horrified when she bought the dog, and thought she was smug and self-satisfied to the end.

And I have absolutely no issue with prostitution yet I had no sympathy with her or her situation. How her children must feel now her story is public, Lord only knows. If she loved them as much as she claimed, you would have thought she would have had the decency to keep that part of her life away from them and their friends.
