Yeah, I read it too (I think mumsnetters must have bought all the copies of Eve this month!) - quite liked it, found it very easy to read, wanted to know what happened but certainly didn't think it was great literature! Apparently Miranda is based on the editor of American Vogue, Anna Wintour who the author worked for - I wonder how much is actually true.

Are you converted to chick-lit now twiglett??

I always feel guilty about reading books like that (weird), & have to read something serious afterwards. Our local Oxfam does a great line in them though, so I can read & then re-donate.

I have it but haven't read it yet - I actually wanted the Tony Parsons one, which Clayhead kindly sent me and didn't want the Prada one in return, on your recommendation I'll give it a go, twiggy.

Our Oxfam shop has lots of freebie books too, hoxtonchick - I was looking at a Judy Astley one today, free from Prima, brand new, but they had the same book used in its publisher's ed for 50p less so I got that instead.

(Most books in our Oxfam are £1.99 or £2.49, they actually have stickers on, I think we must have a high turnover of books here or something; I also went into the Sue Ryder shop today, and they're all 75p-£1.50 in pencil.)

hoxtonchick · 17/03/2004 20:03

Wow, you must live somewhere very posh janh - ALL the books in our Oxfam are 59p. ds & I take a little trip there a couple of times a week, dp despairs .

I thought it was funny too.

Twiglett if you are interested in trying more 'chick-lit' then I've got a couple of auctions live on Ebay at the mo for these sorts of books. I've read them all and they are all good.

hoxtonchick, it is quite posh here - lots of BMW/Merc/Volvo etc 4x4s in Sainsbo's car park (and even a huge Porsche 4x4 yesterday - ds1 was disgusted - what is the point, he said, either buy a proper Porsche or a proper 4x4!)

(Not me though - I have a Zafira.)

I occasionally visit Accrington Oxfam; they don't have the range - I think they must grade their shops and import books into the posh ones - but what they do have are all under £1.

As it is I came home today with 2 bagsful, from Oxfam (£16 including Kate Adie's autobiography, hardback, for a fiver) and Sue Ryder (£7). DH despairs of me too!

roisin · 17/03/2004 20:45

It's def not posh here and our Oxfam prices at £1.99 - £2.50 for standard books. I was in there today too ... managed to get a bit of change from £30. Ouch! Loads of bargains though.

Spent a fortune in Blackwells and Borders on my trip to Oxford last week as well.

WideWebWitch · 17/03/2004 21:03

Twiglett, I quite enjoyed it too - some bits really resonated from my previous corporate life, especially the bit about trying to explain to someone who isn't part of your world who your Senior VP is and why he's so important and why things for him have to be done a certain way and exactly when he wants them (usually yesterday). Yeah, I thought she was probably based on Anna Wintour but with a couple of references to Anna Wintour thrown in to make it not libelous or something. Yep, it was trashy chick lit but my brain can't handle anything else atm, being 3 months post baby and addled as a very addled thing

I worked for a voluntary sector (male) boss who had echoes of her too - not as impossible but pretty maddening!

I have to admit I really enjoyed it. Have weakness for chicklit. Well, most lit really, but chickiness or gore have a special place in the Inferiority Complex at the moment.

Northerner · 18/03/2004 12:58

I got the Tony Parsons one as all the Prada ones had gone. I love reading chic lit, it's all I read I love Marian Keyes and Sophie Kinsella. Never read anything remotely serious. Chic lit is my escape!
