Flying for a week in the sun on Friday. Looking forward to being mostly horizontal with kindle in hand.

Don't like sci-fi, woo or chick lit but books I have loved include Wolf hall & Bring Up the Bodies, recently read Apple Tree yard which I found gripping but annoying in places! Gone Girl - bleak. Loved The Help, Years of Wonder, anything by Colm Toibin, Wally lamb, Barbara Kingsolver.

Partial to a good detective/thriller - love anything by Minette Walters though she's not done anything new in ages, don't like Kathy Reichs or James Paterson stuff.

Currently listening to Instructions for a Heatwave while dog walking and loving it.

Would love to hear your recommendations so I can get loaded!

Thanks in anticipation. Thanks

I demolished Dominion by C J Samsom last week.

I've also rediscovered Josephine Tey, finished The Franchise Affair tonight.

GiraffesAndButterflies · 02/04/2014 23:35

The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. I just finished it and I'm really sorry to have got to the end.

Annienonniemouse · 02/04/2014 23:40

Barbara Vine? Very cleverly plotted psychological thrillers. Anne Tyler - beautifully written and observed.

Theas18 · 02/04/2014 23:47

All the matthew shardlake books by c j Samson . I'm on the last. They are great.

My personal recent favourite series was the Jefferson bass body farm ( forensic anthropology) books before this.

Theas18 · 02/04/2014 23:49

Also just read ann Cleve's raven black ( the Shetland series that's on tv) and the Lewis man trilogy but that's hard at times especially the child abuse themes in the blackhouse.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 03/04/2014 00:12

Ruth Rendell ( who is also Barbara Vine). Second Anne Tyler and Ann Cleves.

highlandcoo · 03/04/2014 08:34

Definitely The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. Also The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier. Both of these have similar themes to The Help.

Earth and Heaven and The Mystery of Glass by Sue Gee. A much under-rated writer.

And Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. Just a lovely and very original novel.

I like similar books to you and think all of the above would fit the bill.

Enjoy your holiday Smile

I think that you will enjoy Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor

MadamBatShit · 05/04/2014 11:06

We are all completely besides ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler. Contemporary American author, about family. Puts disfunctional in a whole new light. I am still reading it so don't know what the ending is going to be like but it is an engrossing read and I love it.

Hannah Kent Burial Rites, historical about Iceland; the last woman that was executed there.. telling the story of how that came about. Very well written.

Harvest by Jim Crace, he was on the chat the other day. Fantastic book.

antimatter · 05/04/2014 18:02

I gave up on Harvest by Jim Crace, something wasn't right.
Will give it another go in a while.

Recently read Helen Howe's Black is the Colour and enjoyed it very much. Better than Gone Girl and Instructions for a Heatwave. It's less than £2 too.

pennyink · 07/04/2014 11:02

The Franchise Affair is a fantastic book. Also, I have just discovered Diane Chamberlain. Try The Midwife's Confession, which is £1.99 on Kindle.

michellestub1965 · 08/04/2014 06:32

Hi have you tried the Frieda Klien novels by Nicci French? First one is called blue Monday

notnowImreading · 08/04/2014 06:45

Yes, I second Nicci French. Other things to try:
Jacqueline Winspear - 1930s murder mysteries, well-written
Big Brother, Lionel Shriver
Possession, A S Byatt
The Cuckoo's Calling, Robert Galbraith (but really J K Rowling)
May We Be Forgiven, A M Holmes
The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt

awaynboilyurheid · 08/04/2014 18:37

A quiet belief in Angels by RJ Ellory is going reduced on Amazon kindle at the moment, its a good read, and I second the Shardlake series by CJ Sampson

awaynboilyurheid · 08/04/2014 18:39

Also A quiet vendetta by RJ Ellory another good one!

kikidee · 08/04/2014 22:28

Life after Life by Kate Atkinson is very good. The Luminaries would be a good holiday book as I think it would be best read in large chunks.
