Still mourning Apple Tree Yard

I know not everyone liked it, but i loved it. It's been 8+ months since finishing it now, I've tried reading a few other things with good reviews but nothing has engaged me. I have never mourned a book like this before. I know it wasn't perfect but something about it hooked me in. Can anyone help?

I've just finished Perfect by Rachel Joyce. I enjoyed Apple Tree Yard so that might be your kind of thing too.

Also feeling the ATY gap. Have just finished The Girl on the Landing by Paul "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" Torday. Did enjoy it

I loved it, too. Have you read any of Louis Doughty's other books? I also enjoyed Stone Cradle and Crazy Paving.

Sometimes when I feel like you do, I find the only solution is to turn back to the classics. I've just read A Handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh and really enjoyed it. It has some parallels with Apple Tree Yard in that its about the consequences of a ridiculous affair. I was surprised by how funny it was, though.

Will you tell me what you liked about it? Maybe I missed something, but I HATED the characters and thought the twist was v weak. I will say it did grip me, but that was only to find out about the twist.

Yes, even though I thought it fizzled out and I didn't enjoy the last 1/4 it was still the best book in a long time.

hollyangel If I'm entirely honest I can't quite put my finger on it. Though I know I'm very bad at describing things, I should spend some time thinking about this and try and figure out how I want to say it. Hope that sort of makes sense?!

I loved it too, to the point that I missed it when I finished. Then I read The Goldfinch and I miss that even more.
