Really struggling with it. Am halfway through it and it just seems such a slog Sad does it get better - unsure if I am going to carry on with it

I loved it. I didn't guess the killer until right near the end, but I never do. Great characters, can't wait for the next one.

Have just started it - it seems a gentle paced story so far and it certainly gets mixed reveiws Smile

Cheboludo · 14/04/2014 16:43

This has just won the LA Times Crime/Mystery Book Award. That should help a little-known author get some publicity in the States Grin

In all seriousness, I do have this lined up and am looking forward to it. An editor friend read it (before the pseudonym was exposed) and really enjoyed it.

PenguinsLoveFishFingers · 15/04/2014 13:29

I have just finished it and quite enjoyed it. I never really read detective fiction (although I've read a bit of Sophie Hannah recently) and surprised myself.

I did enjoy the old school story telling and the comparative lack of gore.

Does anyone who is into this genre have recommendations of authors to try out? Particularly ones which might be stocked at my local library (pretty good selection and very good reservations system, can just be a looooong wait for certain books, like this one!).

Finished CC a few days ago and felt extremely underwhelmed by it.

Wanted it like it as I loved the Casual Vacancy.

Won't be reading the next Robert Galbraith.

Am now reading the Goldfinch and haven't enjoyed a book as much for a very long time. Don't want it to end Smile

Penguins - not terribly similar but for lightweight easy read detective stuff with little gore, I like The Number One Ladies' Detective Agency series. They are just sweet and old fashioned and I rather like the fact that most things can be sorted out with a cup of tea and a good old chin-wag.

PenguinsLoveFishFingers · 17/04/2014 21:52

Oooh, are those good then? I must admit that I've never read them as my mum does and so they've been filed away as 'fiction for the recently retired' based on her other reading preferences Blush. I do like light hearted fiction at the moment (lots going in IRL). Thanks for the recommendation.

Well, I am a horrible cynic tbh, but I think they are a lovely way to switch off without feeling completely lobotomised!

PenguinsLoveFishFingers · 17/04/2014 22:05

I will give them a go then. Smile thanks

Louise1956 · 01/05/2014 07:24

I didn't think it was very good. The characters didn't interest me, and i guessed quite early on who the murderer was, and that particular type of murder has been done better before, by Josephine Tey for instance in 'brat farrar'

saffronwblue · 01/05/2014 07:29

Louise I never understood the murder in brat farrar!

Louise1956 · 02/05/2014 18:08

Simon murdered his brother so he could inherit the family estate. The motive and the type of murder are very similar in 'Cuckoo's calling'.

saffronwblue · 02/05/2014 22:11

Sorry to derail - I never understood how Simon did it when he had an alibi. (heads off to reread).
I really enjoyed Cuckoo's Calling. Preferred it to Casual Vacancy.
