My daughter usually loves books but was not impressed with the Angelinabook I brought for her birthday.

Has anyone got any suggestions that might gain her interest again?

had a quick look at this site

seems to suggest books for age groups, may be helpful

what sort of stories does she like Wendy? And is this for her to read or for you to read to her?

wendy33 · 09/08/2006 18:39

Either really.

She will be in year 1 when she goes back to school and is showing a keen interest in reading but finds the general books for children are too hard for her to read.

She likes magical stories about fairies which I make up myself.

Likes anything girlie and animals.

DS1's nursry teacher suggested the Magic Faraway Tree (which I was a bit at since my mother believed that E Blyton's work was the work of the devil but, apparently, it isn't). You would have to read that one to her I guess but it might be a good place to start?
DS1 into Roald Dahl at the moment - not very girly but The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me has animals in it and is great fun

Am going to town tomorrow so I will have a look for them.
Thanks for your help!

my 5 year old loves percy the park keeper books at the moment

Dd is 5 and enjoyed The Enchanted Wood/Magic Faraway Tree books. She likes Roald Dahl (particularly Fantastic Mr Fox and George's Marvellous Medicine), My Naughty Little Sister, Milly-Molly-Mandy, Olga da Polga, and a series called Mermaid Rock which she can read bits of herself (with help).

She likes poems as well - Spike Milligan's have gone down very well, and she likes the silliness of Edward Lear.

dd's (also 5) current favourite is Fairy Shopping by sally Gardner. You can look for little things on each page and choose things. There's not that much in terms of actual words on page.

Drives me nuts after a while. Off to read it again now.

I found a series of books about animals and fairies called for example 'Bella the Bunny Fairy' but Im not sure if they will be a bit old for her to read herself?

By coincidence I have just been on the Puffin website looking for some new books for 5 year old DS. He loves anything to do with transport though I haven't yet found any new story books for his age group with a transport theme.
Any ideas gratefully received.

My 4yo DD is coming tot he end of The Enchanted Wood and she has loved it - laughing out loud so often. I am sure it is totally suitable for a child slightly older too. Have just ordered The Magic Faraway Tree, and also The Wishing Chair.

WigWamBam · 09/08/2006 20:20

The other thing that dd is obsessed with at the moment is the Where's Wally? series. I don't get the fascination, but she'll spend hours poring over the pages. It may not do much for her reading skills but it's at least an interest in books, which has to be a good thing.

Orlando · 09/08/2006 20:24

Mine loves those too, WWB. And anything where you have to find things. Usborne do a very girly fairy-based one.

wendy33 · 11/08/2006 11:11

My daughter loves the fairy one!

Brought the first book in the series There are so many!

Cheers Seb1 !

there are some fab books by Alan Ahlberg (him of Peepo and Each Peach Pear Plum fame) about a family called the Gaskitts - think there are 4 in the series (The Man Who Wore All His Clothes, The Woman WHo Won THings, The Cat Who Got Carried Away, The Children Who Smelled A Rat)

I haven't read the most recent one (the children who smelled a rat) but dd finds them very funny and they are really well written!
