Have been reading The Enchanted Wood to 4yo DD and she is loving it. Nearly finished though.

What shall we get next?

The Magic Faraway Tree?
Folk of the Faraway Tree?

or something else similar?

I've got it in my head that it is meant to Magic then Folk.

I loved the book of brownies as a child too (or elves or pixies or something...they are all the same )

hulababy · 08/08/2006 20:26

Don't know the last one you mention???

Any other books along these lines to be recommended?

DD has been laughing out loud so mcuh during Enchnted Wood!

agree with you Flame!!

what about "the wishing chair" books? I loved those too.

hulababy · 08/08/2006 20:28

Saw them on Play.com - are they same type of thing?

popsycal · 08/08/2006 20:29

ooh hula - i am about to start the farawy tree books with ds1.
horrified to see they have changed their names though!

hulababy · 08/08/2006 20:30

The children's names? Yes, I thought they had but couldn't quite remember. They are now Joe, Beth and Frannie.

DD has really loved The Enchanted Wood, so definitely recommend you reading them to DS. She has giggled so much, and she always wants more than one chapter a night - sometimes give in. When she was poorly yesterday we read about 10 chapters during the day!

OP posts:
dewmeadow · 08/08/2006 20:31

are they changed?

think so hula - as far I can remember - 2 kiddies have a flying chair in their nursery and fly off and have adventures.

hulababy · 08/08/2006 20:32

Might get The Magic Faraway Tree collection, and also Wishing Chair then - only £4.99 each on Play

OP posts:
popsycal · 08/08/2006 20:33

dewmeadow · 08/08/2006 20:34

popsycal · 08/08/2006 20:37

maybeit ws famous five then

think enid might have something to say about that though

hulababy · 08/08/2006 20:37

LOL. DD also has another of her books - a collection of short stories, many about dear old Mr Twiddle

OP posts:
Charlee · 08/08/2006 20:38

I have ordered The Faraway Tree Collection, and The Wishing Chair as well. Both have 3 stories i the book. I am sure DD will love them. Came to less than £10 inc P&P too - impressed The Enchanted Wood alone cost me £5.99 in town!

OP posts:
dewmeadow · 08/08/2006 20:41

and there was cross dressing in teh Famous 5!!

popsycal · 08/08/2006 20:41

hula - she may like the 'sprinters' books too
ds1 loves them
famous authors - dick king smith, jaqueline wilson, michael morprugo - but short stories in chapters

recommened the finger eater

popsycal · 08/08/2006 20:42

In modern reprints, the names of the children have been changed - from Jo, Bessie and Fanny to Joe, Beth and Frannie - in the first case to make it clear that Jo is a boy, in the second because Bessie is seldom used as a nickname for Elizabeth anymore (most would go by Beth, Liz or Lizzie), and in the third because Fanny is a slang term in the United Kingdom (see Wiktionary entry). Cousin Dick, who appears in "The Magic Faraway Tree", has his name changed to "Rick" in new editions, presumably for similar reasons.

hulababy · 08/08/2006 20:42

I will add this thread to my facorites and come back to it when we have read these. I'll certainly look out for them Popsy.

Bedtime stories are much more interesting now she is old enough for proper books Trouble is at the moment it means I have to do every bedtime, so I can keep up with what is happening.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 08/08/2006 20:43

if she loved the enchanted wood, she'll love the faraway tree

dd was also totally captivated by those!

hulababy · 08/08/2006 20:44

Excellent!

OP posts:
Cappucino · 08/08/2006 20:44
