It's not my group, but we are meeting for the first time next week.

I've read the first book, but we need recommendations for subsequent books.

I loved American Wife and would like to recommend something in that vein. I've looked at her new novel, sistersland, but the reviews aren't great. Any ideas?

The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farell. Very relevant to your "women" theme I think, and thought-provoking and moving too.

dozily · 17/02/2014 18:22

Nb. I've never heard of American Wife so my recommendation is probably not in a similar vein Blush

The Group by Mary McCarthy.

It's a book that was published in the 60s. It's about a group of American female students who graduate in the 30s and follows their lives post graduation. It's really a comment on how these bright, independent woman are forced to struggle during a time when they were expected to be nothing more than wives and mothers.

It's a brilliant read :)

The Wednesday Sisters - Meg Clarke Clayton.

Admittedly it wasn't to my taste, but it seems to have excellent reviews.

And there's another great one I read for a book club ages ago - but of course, while I can remember the plot, some of the writing and even what the front of the book looked like, I can't remember either the author or the title Hmm

vvviola · 17/02/2014 19:03

Ah, I got it. Sofi Oksanen: Purge.

It isn't strictly just about women, but the relationship between one of the main characters and her sister is key, as is the framing relationship between the old woman and the younger "runaway".

It's pretty intense, but worked really well in our book club.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. Women-focused, fascinating, memorable.
