We are in danger of being taken over by books. Today I bagged up about 100 books, (mostly light-reading) to take to the charity shop. I don't think they'll be read again by us and they are just cluttering up the house. Sensible.

But I feel SOOOOO bad!

Well done -I find it difficult (if not impossible) to get rid of books

lionheart · 05/08/2006 00:10

Does that mean you'd never actually, um, throw a book away?

JessaJam · 05/08/2006 00:14

would never throw a book in the bin (although have been tempted at times!!) unless it was damaged enough to be unreadable.

Would always give to charity shop etc, other wise what a waste!

misdee · 05/08/2006 00:16

i have to sort out the childrens books, they are everywhere. i am going to give some to the local GP surgery as they have no childrens books at all there.

nikkie · 05/08/2006 18:53

I tend to use readitswapit or take to the charity shop but I couldn't through them in the bin!

ginmummy · 05/08/2006 18:56

I can't throw them in a bin! I give them to friends if they ask to borrow them and every once in a while my mum will ask if she can take a few to work to lend to the staff and they never come back. I'd like to thing people are getting the same enjoyment out of them that I did.

Books are like peacock feathers - you should never throw them away as it's bad luck. They have to be given away.

What's that scheme that runs in London where people leave books on tube trains etc, with a little message saying read it then leave it, or another of yours, for someone else to read?

You could start that up where you live, just spread them around town

nikkie · 05/08/2006 19:50

do you mean bookcrossing?

lionheart · 05/08/2006 20:56

No, I can't throw them out either.
I almost did with American Psycho but had to retrieve it and recycle it through the Oxfam shop instead.

JackieNo · 05/08/2006 20:59

Bookcrossing's fab - and it's worldwide, not just in London. I can't throw books - like giving them away, or at least to a charity shop (and usually come back with a few more from there while I'm in there)

I never throw books or glossy mags away, giving them away or selling the books on Amazon make me feel slightly less guilty about buying them all in the first place.
