Because I figure that if it has only just been published then this reduces the risk of her already having it. Any suggestions?

Mini Grey has a new one ...

Or you could go for an American classic like Harold and the Purple Crayon, it's great, but Brits never have it.

Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon . I haven't read it, but the reviews were good, and her work is always good.

Thank you for those

I just bought a really nice one, think it's called The Bear Snores On or something. Really nicely illustrated, nice story, nice to read etc.

The Lyle the crocodile books are good, if still in print. Oh yes, the first one is, but not cheap . That's another old American classic that nobody in this country has. Sweet story, lovely illustrations.

Thanks, I'll go armed with these suggestions to Waterstones (birthday party is tomorrow so no time to order on line)

Ah, then go for Mini Grey, that should be in stock in Waterstones.

Will do, but might order other books from Amazon for dd. She's is getting tired of her current reading material

All Mini Grey's books are lovely, I'd buy a paperback for home rather than a hardback. And all the Lyle the Crocodile series are very good too. I often buy people Harold as a birthday gift, as I know they won't have it (I'm Canadian, but living in the UK), and it's always a big hit.

I love "Harold and the Purple Crayon" and I'm not American - I got it in Singapore, where it's easy to get US books.
