I cried buckets when I read To Kill a Mockingbird - maybe teenage hormones
And parts of All quiet on the Western Front made me weep

DontlookatmeImshy · 28/07/2006 22:36

Greensleeves · 28/07/2006 22:40

Oh, and a children's book called "The Birthday Present". It makes me fill up, I've no idea why

Diana's Story

A story of a woman who was one of the first people to have full blown ME and their struggle for a diagnosis.

Despite the absolute horror of the pain and distress that Diana went through, hardly ever did she lose any of her warmth, her ability to laugh at life, or her determination to win the war against this disease, despite losing the occasional battle.

The book, despite being very sad at times, is a celebration of Diana's life. It shows her strength of character, despite being very ill indeed, her natural warmth, her love for her husband, her wonderful mind and most of all,how this man loved and cherished his wife and wanted nothing more than to ease her suffering and make her life as complete and happy as possible.

It tells of the couples' fight and determination to get the medical authorities to take them seriously and how the illness not only affected Diana, but all the members of her family too. Throughout the book however, are splashes of humour that will have you laughing out loud, and yet the story is so much more...

Ladies I reccomend[sp] it to you.

if you're into war related novels you could try 'little boy lost' by marghanita laski. it's a persephone book so you'd have to mail order it but everyone i've pressed it on has enjoyed it (so far!). i hae recommended it on mn before - but it's not the only book i've ever read - honest!

Birdsong makes me weep too! Come to think of it, many many books make me weep. The Last one was 'Goodnight Mr Tom' (can't remember who it's by, it's a 'kid's book' but not recommened for under 10s IMO) but I woke dh up, I howled so much

Precious Bane, by Mary Webb always makes me sniffle (although it's the happy ending which makes me cry)

Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy. And Tess actually, too!

pinknfluffy29 · 31/07/2006 18:29

lovely bones and also lucky by alice sebold first is fiction 2nd is true

TitianRed · 23/08/2006 08:43

I agree, FullMoonFiend: Jude the Obscure has to be the biggest tearjerker. I was inconsolable when I first read it, aged 18. After doing Tess for A-level, I turned into a Hardy obsessive for a while! Haven't reread any of his stuff for ages, though, as my mind can only seem to cope with light and fluffy literature at the moment!

incy · 23/08/2006 09:04

Yes the lovely bones - cried all the way through.

Flamesparrow · 23/08/2006 09:05

His Dark Materials
Grapes of Wrath
My sister's keeper (not great quality, but oodles of tears)

Liath - The chrysalids did it to me after having children too!!!

blueshoes · 23/08/2006 09:14

My Cousin Rachel - Daphne du Maurier

catsmother · 23/08/2006 17:26

Grapes of Wrath
Time Traveller's Wife

.... and, believe it or not, a book by Alan Titchmarsh of all people called "Only Dad" where a young mum dies all of a sudden.

LaDiDaDi · 23/08/2006 18:53

26a by Diana Evans is really sad in parts . I cried buckets at one point and it really affected my mood for a few days because the characters were so well written that you really felt for them.

loopylou0612 · 23/08/2006 18:58

Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson is the one and only book, EVER to make me cry!

southeastastra · 23/08/2006 19:00

Dr who the legend cause i just tripped over it

alexsmilitantmum · 23/08/2006 19:01

the worst book for making me cry EVER was one i can't even remember the mane of now....yes i can, it was called between two eternities and was about a premature baby in a scbu, and it was written from the baby's point of view.MY god.when i finished it i sat sobbing for about an hour.really really sad, but good at the same time.

i also cried the other week reading 'the accidental mother'by somebody colman but i was having my period so i'm excused.

fullmoonfiend · 23/08/2006 19:03

Titianred ''done because we are too meny...'' I'm welling up just thinking about it

I still am a major Thos Hardy fan, despite it being (OMG!) almost 20 years since studying Hardy for A Levels.

The Kite Runner. About Afghanistan - bit harrowing but really good.

Laughed my head off reading 'I don't know how she does it' - forgotten who by, and 'Might contain nuts'. Light, fluffy and hilarious.
