I have recently joined a book club - and this is my first book. It's by Vikram Seth.

OMG .... it's about 1400 pages long .... and you need a magnifying glass to read the print.

I am literally ploughing through it and findng it rather hard work.

On holiday I usually get through about 5 books .... I am on page 866

No spoilers please ... but has anyone else managed to get to the end ??

Thanks

I read this several years ago and loved it , I agree it is very long but well worth it!

NotQuiteCockney · 26/07/2006 22:22

I've read it all. Twice I think. It's good, quite fluffy really.

gegs73 · 26/07/2006 22:30

I have had it for about a year and keep trying to read it but find it such hard work and I'm normally a really quick reader. I have never managed to get past the first 100 pages and have given it up as a bad job

Beetle73 · 26/07/2006 22:42

yes. Can't really remember it, but know I enjoyed it. But that was pre-motherhood. Might find it too much of a commitment now.

oooh yes love this book - found it utterly engrossing. Love novels about India for some reason.

singersgirl · 26/07/2006 22:55

I read it years ago and loved it at the time. But (see other threads passim) since the children I can't remember anything that I've read.

TuttiFrutti · 27/07/2006 09:22

Yes, and I loved it! Yes, it is off-puttingly long, but once you really get into it you may find you are transported to a different world. I was actually disappointed when I finished it.

I read it about 10 years ago and bits of it still stick in my mind - Meenakshi melting down the medals anyone?

Blueberry3 · 27/07/2006 09:24

One of my favorite books, totally engrossing and I planned (in my head) a lot of holiday itineraries to India once I'd finished it (am a bit sad like that...). I remember not feeling too put off by the length of it as the chapters are quite short and I'm a bit of a one for having to finish a reading stint at the end of a chapter, so I think that helped, along with the good yarn...

Crystaltips · 27/07/2006 16:26

Thanks .... I just need to keep going .... Tutti - how do you remember the names - let alone spel them .... and after 10 years !!!

It's not "totally" my cup of tea truth be told ....

On another note ... which book would you reccomend after this .... my initial thoughts are something short

im reading it at the moment , although i find i need total quiet and concentration , am only a few chapters in and have switched to The Time Travellers Wife.

lilibet · 30/08/2006 22:34

I really loved it!

For something short and light why not try Cold Comfort Farm? It was our book group choice last month and everyone loved it. It's laugh out loud funny.

Heathcliffscathy · 30/08/2006 22:43

god yes, i read it going round india for four months and i dont' know if it was because of where i was but i loved it!
