Book to read aloud to DS

Looking for suggestions for a long-ish book (short chapters) to read aloud to DS (6 in Sept) over the hols.

Looking for something that he will enjoy listening to, he seems to have gone past the traditional short bedtime story books.

Any suggestions?

Wishing chair and Magic faraway Tree (both Enid Blyton) are my DD's absolute favourite - we have every book and we are currently going through them for the 2nd time.

I love watching her face as she lies in bed as she's obv got a mental picture in her mind of the story.

dd1 (6) really enjoyed Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

Do you want a story in chapters (eg Fantastic Mr Fox) or a book with several self contained chapters (eg Flat Stanley)
I'd recommend both of the above, some of the others DS (6) has enjoyed at reception age were:

  • Danny the Champion of the World and Witches (Dahl)
  • Secret Seven and then some Famous Five
  • A book of Greek Myths and one of pirate stories

We have read the following with DS (5.5):

Various Flat Stanley
Various Horrid Henry
Charlie ATCF
Charlie ATGGE(not that great IMHO)
BFG
James and the giant peach

We also read through a volume of Thomas stories (twice), volume of Beatrix Potter, volume of fairy stories, volume of dragon and giant stories, Richard Scarry's Big World Book (twice) and are currently reading a volume of Enid Blyton short stories about dogs!

I love Flat Stanley - didn't know you could get lots of different ones

I think they sell them reasonably priced on Play.com. Actually I think Flat Stanley is great to start with and as slightly less involved than some of the others.

Paddington books are pretty good too
