juneybean · 30/12/2013 11:19

Hopefully nobody minds me starting this thread.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more as many people have achieved this year!)

Please also check out our group on Goodreads if you're stuck for ideas of what books to read!

Was intending to update every 5 books but this thread is moving so quickly this year I need a place mark Grin
So...

  1. Isabel Ashdown - Summer of '76
  2. Nicholas Best - Five Days That Shocked The World
Enjoyed dipping in and out of this but took me a while to get through it. Some interesting stories in it. 1/3 of the way through -
  1. H.M Castor - VIII
Liking it so far
minsmum · 25/01/2014 15:12

Book 9 One wrong Move Shannon McKenna
Book 10 Edge of Midnight Shannon McKenna
Book 11 Out of Control Shannon McKenna
Book 12 Standing in the Shadows Shannon McKenna
Book 13 Behind Closed Doors Shannon McKenna
Book 14 Fade to Midnight Shannon McKenna
Book 15 Five Little Pigs Agatha Christie

As you can see I was on a bit of a theme. I can't seem to get into the twelve at all.

DumSpiroSpero · 25/01/2014 15:19

Those of you who are in double figures already... how on earth do you find the time?! Am currently assuming you are all either:

a/ Highly efficient SAHM's with school age children

b/ Working mums with a lengthy commute by train

c/ trained in speed reading

or

d/ reading really small books

I want to know your secrets! Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/01/2014 15:54

Anne What did I do?

Dum - I work full time and don't read on the commute as it makes me sick. I don't tend to read until around 9 o' clock and do most of my reading between 9 and 10, in the bath. I just read v v quickly - always have done (get it off my mum!).

minsmum · 25/01/2014 16:44

I do read quickly but I never,or very rarely, watch tv. My laptops are all broken so I can't go on line very much. I do work but at the moment I am taking my Dm to lots of hospital appointments, so lots of hanging around. Don't worry I won't keep it up for long.

AnneWentworth · 25/01/2014 20:32

Remus "Reader - don't bother" as opposed to "Reader, I married him". I chuckled.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/01/2014 20:39

Sorry, Anne. Being v slow on the uptake.

whitewineandchocolate · 25/01/2014 20:42

Finished number 5, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Agatha Christie but I've been cheating a bit by reading short books so far. I have now started CJ Sanson, Dominion which looks like a bumper read.

This thread is definitely getting me reading more and mumsnetting less!

Best1sWest · 25/01/2014 20:43

Glad to see I'm not the only one struggling with The Luminaries DBXmum. It's putting me off reading at the moment.

mum2jakie · 25/01/2014 21:53

Book 6. The Sittaford Mystery - Agatha Christie

Really enjoyed it. I managed to work out the killer too but there were plenty of red herrings so I wasn't sure I'd got the right person. I'm going to read another Christie next.

#4 The day without yesterday - Stuart Clarke. It's the third in his trilogy about eminent scientists. Really interesting, and absorbing.

Just noticed I have two books I got over Christmas to read, so they'll be next....

DumSpiroSpero · 25/01/2014 23:55

Grin I think it's the temptation of t'internet that's my problem as I barely watch TV.

I finish work half an hour before DD comes out of school so I normally just stay on as there's no point going home in between but I've been leaving on time and reading in the car for half an hour since starting this!

I thought I read quite quickly too but maybe not as quick as I thought.

mins hope your mum's ok.

minsmum · 26/01/2014 00:04

Thanks Dum it's not going to be easy I'm afraid

DumSpiroSpero · 26/01/2014 00:16

Well, all the best to you and your mum. Hopefully the books will provide a bit of escapism from you anyway. Thanks

DumSpiroSpero · 26/01/2014 00:16

escapism for you, not from you! Blush

minsmum · 26/01/2014 00:18

That made me laugh. She would probably agree with from.

CoteDAzur · 26/01/2014 08:27

MrsCosmo - That trilogy is in my To Read list. I'm glad you liked it.

Book 8 done and dusted "The Very Thought of You" by Rosie Allison

www.amazon.co.uk/Very-Thought-You-Rosie-Alison-ebook/dp/B003QP4DRM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390729860&sr=8-1&keywords=the+very+thought+of+you

Supposed to be a love story but was very miserable.

WednesdayNext · 26/01/2014 12:09
  1. Jodi Picoult "The Storyteller", by far the best of her books that I've read.
  2. Stephanie Meyer - "Twilight" - I enjoyed it a lot. Much to my own annoyance.
  3. Stephanie Meyer - "New Moon"

I'm now concurrently reading Germaine Greer "The Female Eunuch" 67% done) and the third Twilight book.

DuchessofMalfi · 26/01/2014 15:30
  1. Mansfield Park - unfortunately it didn't get any better for me. I had suspected I wasn't going to enjoy this one, and I didn't. Just don't like Fanny Price - dull, dull, dull :o
  1. Apple Tree Yard - really enjoyed this. Loved the final part, with the Old Bailey trial, was excellent. Felt like I was sat in the gallery watching the trial unfold. Very atmospheric. Raises some very interesting moral questions - how far would you go to protect someone you love? Would you ever betray them to save yourself?
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/01/2014 18:54

Next one finished - was it number 13? A book about Georgian households. Over -wordy and too much of a feminist slant for my liking overall, but some interesting stuff in it - eg about wallpaper patterns! here

ballroomblitz · 26/01/2014 20:56
  1. Naomi's Room - Jonathan Aycliffe. Fancied a ghost story but shouldn't haven't bothered. Dull
  1. The 7th Day - Nika Lubitsch. Can't remember downloading this but it strikes me it was probably a free one at the time. Liked the way the narrative went from one scene in the courtroom to the past when the event happened. Unfortunately guessed the culprit within the first ten pages so a big disappointment.

Both books evidence that you should never trust reviews on Amazon.

On The Universe versus Alex Woods atm and enjoying it.

I can't stand Mansfield Park Duchess. Once was enough to drag myself through it.

ballstoit · 26/01/2014 21:29

Very late joining, but have decided to step away from FB, so this is just the challenge I need!

  1. The Last Runaway. Tracy Chevalier. Enjoyed it and now want to learn more about quilting, although the end was a bit 'meh'.
  1. Snow White Must Die. Nele Neuhaus. But of a slow start, but loved the atmosphere and from midway became more gripping.
  1. The Donor. Helen Fitzgerald. Loved it.

About to start Kate Atkinson, Life After Life. My Mum borrowed and read it, and described it as 'odd, very odd'...but this is how she probably describes me to people so I'm looking forward to it Grin
