Hopefully nobody minds me starting this thread.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more as many people have achieved this year!)

Please also check out our group on Goodreads if you're stuck for ideas of what books to read!

Not fiction but a book nonetheless 3. Quit smoking Today, Paul McKenna. Haven't quit smoking today Grin

About a third of the way through the fourth. Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov. Even though I knew the subject matter before reading it I did find it quite distracting at the start. All the talk of twelve year old 'nymphets' disturbed me slightly. Starting to get more into the story now so will see how it pans out.

hi, i'm in. will try for 50 this year

Book 3 - May We Be Forgiven by A M Homes. Bought as a 99p kindle book at Christmas. I enjoyed its dark strange humour. The characters live bizarre lives which begin to appear quite normal after a while. It's the second of A M Homes' novels I've read and her humour is growing on me. Will read more. Recommended if you like novels with quirky outlooks on life.

#3. The Explorer - James Smythe

This one was a reread as it has a sequel coming out next week. Difficult to discuss as you really need to go into it with no plot details to get the most out of it. But I will say for any fans of sci fi/horror/space travel it should be a must read, as long as you can overlook the odd liberty being taken with the laws of physics. Hope the sequel lives up to it!

  1. Robert Galbraith - The Cuckoo's Calling

A slowish start to the year for me; this book seemed to take me a long time to read. I enjoyed it a lot though.

I now need to read Mad About the Boy for book group.

That was me littlemiss! You should read katie fforde's first few books, they are really good. Living Dangerously and wild designs are my favourites of hers thst I have read.

Though to be honest, comppared to a gap yesr for grown ups, a perfect proposal was a great read. Had to abandon the gap year one as it was riddled with every cliche known to a mid life crisis. Boooring.

Book 7 Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. Loved it even though I knew the ending, who could avoid that really with all the film's about.
Now reading The Twelve by Justin Cronin, How to teach Quantum physics to Your Dog by Chad Orzel, Blood and Fire by Shannon McKenna and Single by Saturday by Catherine bybee. Reading the last two when my brain gets overloaded by the first two

wiltingfast · 12/01/2014 14:03

Ooo, the twelve is great! I hope you enjoy it :)

HarpyFishwifeTwat · 12/01/2014 16:20

Finished book 2 - The Midnight Rose by Lucinda Riley. Great read and took just a week to read a 659 page book - very good for me.

Just started The Undesirables by the guy who wrote Guernica, which I absolutely loved.

  1. Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin.

This was brilliant, like CSI but set in the 12th century, with a dash of feminism thrown in for good measure.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/01/2014 18:01

I really enjoyed the Mistress of the Art of Death series. Sadly, I think the writer died iirc. :(

Book 6 - Three Men In A Boat - loved this; can't believe it's taken me so long to get around to it.
Book 7 - A Monster Calls Just lovely

I can't get over how quickly some of you read!!!

I'm now half way through Les Miserables, which is third on my list and alongside that I'm also reading a collection of poetry by Vickie Johnstone "Travelling Light" on my kindle app- which is handy when standing in queues!!

I'm trying not to buy many new books this year (I have 30 odd actual books on my shelf and over 200 unread on my kindle) but some of the books mentioned upthread are tempting me!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/01/2014 18:03

Ooh do poetry collections count too? In that case, I've read book 8 too: collected Sylvia Plath.

AnneWentworth · 12/01/2014 18:26

I need to find some poetry to read for one of my challenges. Happily Louis de Bernieres (who is my favourite contemporary writer) has brought out a collection although I am contemplating reading some Turkish poetry, maybe Nazim Hikmet but unsure whether to really challenge myself and read in the original or translated.

  1. The Gift of Fear. V interesting.

Need to pick up The pace if I want to make 50!

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 12/01/2014 19:00

Oh bloody hell Remus, I really enjoyed it. I have added Adelia to my list of favourite fictional characters. Do you know how many there are?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/01/2014 19:15

Four, I think. All worth a read.

MegBusset · 12/01/2014 19:36
  1. The Leopard - Giuseppe Tomasi Dr Lampedusa

An unexPected gem, this, which I'd never heard of until it popped up as an Amazon suggestion. Written in 1957 and published posthumously, it's about the decline of the Sicilian aristocracy in the 1800s, but a lot more moving than that may suggest.

CoteDAzur · 12/01/2014 19:44

I'm only 50% into my 1st book, The Worst Journey In The World Shock The two rambling introductions at the beginning really cut into my enjoyment of this book, but I'm getting back into it now. Just started the Winter Journey, and enjoying it immensely.

MrsMaryCooper · 12/01/2014 19:49
  1. Drink - Ann Johnston. Surprisingly badly written.

  1. A Christmas Carol -Dickens... I kept hearing Gonzo's voice!
  2. Our Man in Havana - Graham Greene...love Greene. Really enjoyed this.

Slowly but surely getting through my backlog...down to 5 unread books on my kindle, 3 of which should be fairly quick!

whitewineandchocolate · 12/01/2014 20:21
  1. The Good Terrorist - Doris Lessing

Half way through Brighton Belle, a 99p kindle special which is a great light easy read.

AnneWentworth · 12/01/2014 20:44

MegBusset - I read The Leopard last year. It is good isn't it. I really like the cover.

Cote - hello. I was wondering where you were.
