Don't feel like reading anything too taxing at the moment, but can't read most chick lit as am TOO IRRITABLE (and why do they have to be so long? Like we don't know what's going to happen). Loved Jenny Crusie's books but now read them all. Any suggestions re lighthearted books which are decently written?
Surely there must be some decent authors who aren't dealing with Big Issues? What happened to fun books?

Not trashy but might be on the right lines as about relationships, quick and not brain-heavy and your library will prob have as it was shortlisted for one of the biggies - Booker I think: The Essence of the Thing, by Madeleine St John. It's v good without feeling it's being good for you, if YSWIM.

If you like sexual intrigue in an oriental setting, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Empress Orchid . Page turners for me and trashy

i really enjoyed "The Time Traveller's Wife". It was a good holiday read but very original and well written.

Nicholas Coleridge might fit the bill; most recent one is "A much married man". I also enjoyed "Godchildren" (not sure that's the title) a year or 2 ago.
Similarly "Snobs" by the man who wrote Gosford Park is a light read.

The Ivy Chronicles is good for a light read - can't remember who wrote it, about a woman who loses her high power job and sets up her own business getting New York kids into private schools. Little bit trashy but not too bad (I don't like chick lit) and just a nice easy read.

I really enjoyed "Blackberry Wine" by the author of "Chocolat"

Well wriiten and not hard work at all. I got it free with a mag, but can't remember whih one.

I think Marian Keyes is quite inoffensive (I'm sure someone will disagree)I've read several of her books and have not been left with that 'well, that was a waste of time' feeling that I've had with other chick lit books.
Mary Wesley is also quite light but substantial (IYKWIM) reading too

just finished May Contain Nuts by John O Farrell. Found it unbearable for a couple of chapters than revised my expectations and kind of quite enjoyed it. It's about horrible competitive (and imhp unfeasible) parents in south London. reasonably entertaining if a little preachey

jenny eclairs novels are hilarious , gritty , crude and unputdownable imo. just done another post about them...' having a lovely time' is my fave.

If you're after fun, it has to be anything by Jonathan Coe... the earlier stuff in particular - What a Carve Up, House of Sleep. The last one makes me weep with laughter.

I was just going to recommend Jennifer Crusie when I saw your title, but then I read your post. How about Serena Mackesie, I liked Virtue the best, but Simply Heaven and The Temp were pretty good too. Similar to Crusie in as far as it's written by someone with a good command of English and it's very funny.

try melissa bank's the wonder spot, it's def lighthearted, and blessed with a bit of irony

Turquoise · 26/07/2006 21:13

Try Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series.

Ooh, hadn't checked this thread for a whie and suddenly there's lots of suggestions! Will have a play on Amazon later.

Alfiescoops: OH has just finished the Rotters Club and highly recommends it, so I might start with that one .

Thanks for all your help!
