I need to update DS book collection. We have been reading the same books for ages. He has the most popular ones such as The Gruffalo etc and Dr Seuss. Need to expand a bit. What is your four year olds favourite?

We mostly use the library. My 4 year-old is obsessed with books about cars, trains, plans, rockets. Yesterday we spent ages on a book about how a car is put together (tried very hard to stay awake myself). He also loves reading about children who are just a little bit naughty. I suppose he identifies with the characters! BTW, have you tried the BFC bookclub? They have some great books and great recommendations for each age group!

no , what is the BFC book club? DS is obsessed with Robots, but cant find anything suitable for his age range.

we started reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to our 4year DS as we'd got completely fed up with Thomas the bloody tank engine...now he's obsessed with Roald Dahl books.
Charlie is a good one to start with (especially if he likes chocolate)The Guiraffe and the Pelly and Me is our family favourite

DS loved the Gruffalo ones and I can't really think of much else. When he was about 4.5 we started reading chapter books with him such as Flat Stanley and also I remember we got a compendium of nursery rhymes out of the library for him and also had a complete set of the original Thomas that we read and Beatrix Potter.

Others he liked were:
The Little Red Train books
Sitting Ducks
Harry and the Dinasours books

Also what about Richard Scarry? DS is 5.5 and we have just re-read my old Big World Book.

Roald Dahl is great if he is ready for it. DH is currently reading DS the BFG. And we have done Charlie and TCF and Charlie and TGGE (not so good IMO) and James and the Giant Peach. Also they like Horrid Henry but might be better to wait until he gets to school for that.

Katie Morag has been my 4yr old ds' favourite for months now. He adores the naughty big boy cousins.

not sure if he is ready for chapter books yet. Though he does like stories on tape, so may be he is. Charlie and the Choclate Factory might be a good start.

Alfie and Annie Rose books by Shirley Hughes. Alfie is almost 5 I believe. My 4yr old DS loves Alfie and as he has a 2yr old sister too (just like Alfie) it's even better.

cori before we started on chapter books we read the complete set of original Thomas's which were in one volume but still one story per night IYSWIM and sprinkled with pictures. Then we did Beatrix Potter which is the same. Then we did a compendium of fairy stories. Then I think we moved onto Flat Stanley. But as you can imagine some months had elapsed by this point.
