I gave my father the Story of St Kilda which he loved, so am looking for either a novel or nonfiction about or set in Scotland.
He lives in Canada so always feels nostalgic for 'home' and is very hard to buy presents for.

What about Milltown

For gritty stuff, there's always No Mean City by Alexander (?) MacArthur.

Glad others likes Sea Room. We used to live on Harris and dh could see the Shiants most days through his work. Can also second The Lighthouse Stevensons - it's on my bedside table in the queue for a re-read!

The Metagama Inheritanceby Catherine McLachlan, an author from Lewis.

In 1923 the Metagama left Lewis to head to Canada with hundreds of young men and women looking for a better life (Fact)

The story follows the Metagama descendents planning a cruise back to to the homeland and how , Lewis appears to be more valuable than anyone could have ever thought.

I really enjoyed it as I have a connection to the outer hebrides.
