OK so I'm not a huge fan of gory horror, but do enjoy psychological thrills/chills. I've read Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and enjoyed it. I've also read On Writing, another good read. So what would fans recommend I chose next??

The Stand.

noblegiraffe · 15/10/2013 16:20

The Stand is amazing, but the one that really stayed with me is It.

bruffin · 15/10/2013 16:21

My favorite is The Dead Zone

gamerchick · 15/10/2013 16:23

The Green mile.

Also rose madder

Also the Bachman books.. especially if you can get rage included as it's been taken out.

I could go on but ill stop now Grin

VivaLeThrustBadger · 15/10/2013 16:23

urtwistingmymelonman · 15/10/2013 16:25

insomnia.
delores claibourne.

gamerchick · 15/10/2013 16:25

If you get the stand.. try and get the full version.. there's loads of bits missing out of the newer reprints.

ilovepowerhoop · 15/10/2013 16:28

the new one - Doctor Sleep (the follow up to the Shining) - I am part way through it just now.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 15/10/2013 16:44

The Dead Zone. The Green Mile. Misery.

MikeLitorisBites · 15/10/2013 16:55

The shining, rose madder, insomnia and Dolores claibourne are all good and not what I would call gory.

Im halfway through under the dome and enjoying that. I also enjoyed his short story collections.

MrsOakenshield · 15/10/2013 17:01

I haven't read many of the more recent ones, though I've just borrowed Doctor Sleep from the library, but I enjoyed many of the early ones - The Shining, Carrie, Christine, Cujo. However, Salem's Lot has got to be the absolute, most frightening, terrifying book I have ever read - I wouldn't read it after dark or if I was in the house on my own (I was about 20 when I read it). It was very good though!

PinkFairyArmadillo · 15/10/2013 17:02

Rose Madder, Lisey's Story, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Duma Key, The Shining, Insomnia, IT, Bag of Bones.

I've aways liked Four Past Midnight as far as collections go as well.

Medal · 15/10/2013 17:04

Can't wait to read Doctor Sleep when it is avail in paperback!

My favourites are the Stand, the Shining, Salem's Lot, Misery and Cujo.

Sorelip · 15/10/2013 17:06

It, the Stand, Dolores Claiborne, Rose Madder.

RedlipsAndSlippers · 15/10/2013 17:08

Misery is brilliant, so is Under The Dome.

ProfondoRosso · 15/10/2013 17:13

My favourites are Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary and The Shining. All good spooky reads!

I'm half way through It and have been reading it for fucking ages, it's bloody massive

chickensaresafehere · 15/10/2013 17:15

My all time favourite is The Stand, but I also love Rose Madder,so brilliant.
Needful Things,Christine & The Tommyknockers are all great too!!

bimblebee · 15/10/2013 17:18

The Dead Zone is my favourite - not too gory like many of his others!!

LeBearPolar · 15/10/2013 17:20

I love his short stories - read Full Dark, No Stars over the summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. Other favourites are The Dead Zone, Misery, The Dark Half, Cujo. I liked Cell as well.

Sorelip · 15/10/2013 17:22

I forgot Christine, that is a damn good book.

RadagastTheBrown · 15/10/2013 17:39

I know the made for TV film was pants but 'It' is a fantastic book. Pennywise the Clown is one of the scariest characters ever!

RadagastTheBrown · 15/10/2013 17:43

Having said that, if it's psychological thrills/chills you're after, have you tried Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series?

ProfondoRosso · 15/10/2013 17:45

Agree, Radagast - I wish someone would remake it in a properly eerie style!

gamerchick · 15/10/2013 18:20

Full dark no stars really ticked me off. It was like he was grumpy in the afterword slagging all his fans off. Or that's how I read it anyway. As if he had felt forced to write the book or something.

ScooseIsLoose · 15/10/2013 18:30

Joyland is one of his more recent ones and it's brilliant, it's one of the first books I have read in ages that I couldn't put down. I highly recommend it!
