Has anybody read Doctor Sleep yet?

Started it yesterday and just finished it. Must say that I rather enjoyed it. Anybody else?

You are however allowed to give me a brief synopsis

I've just started it. Loving it so far.

I'm reading it. Only got to the bit at the start where Danny has woken up and seen that poor toddler

It was late at night so I had to stop reading as it made me sad I am a softy. But will start again tonight.

Ooh, am saving it for when I go on holiday in a few weeks - can't wait!

Wouldn't dream of spoiling it! Danny is grown up and battling alcoholism. His shining still works and he 'meets' a girl with super-strong shining - together they battle evil. That's all! :)

I won't spoil it other than to say that I had tears running down my face by the end.

And King has nothing to worry about regarding the reviews- they have all been great (especially the Guardian) and I appreciated the chance to find out what happened to Danny and Mr Hallorann.

When you've all finished, will return to properly worship at the feet of Mr King!. I'm now going to re-read The Shining, The Dead Zone and 11/63

Should I reread The Shining first?
Can't remember too much about it.

It might help if you reallly cannot recall much of it MrsDavidBowie although SK writes the sequel so skillfully though that it jogs your memory without feeling as though chunks of 'The Shining' have been either C&Ped or rehashed. Danny's memories are very subtly woven in, appearing a natural part of the new story.

Have seen/heard a few duff reviews tbh.

I loved it.

Really no reason to re-read The Shining unless you want to. All you need to remember is that Danny has The Shining.

Very different to The Shining, works well as a stand alone book too.

I really enjoyed it.

It's sitting beside me even now - I let DH have it first because I am incredibly wonderfully generous and unselfish. He loved it. I am looking forward to reading it.

I've waited until I finished the book to post, dying to know what others thought.

I didn't like all that 'Rose the Hat' and the True Knot. Not sure they were adequately creepy villains next to the seemingly invincible Aphra. Some other niggles too, but overall the story opens up really well, and I found it a well-written, enjoyable read.

I hated the True Knot murder of the little boy and found that very hard to read (His hoarse little voice). The denouement between Rose and Abra fizzled out a little bit but I did find the actual ending moving and it did trigger a few tears.

Yes it was less dense I agree. I wanted to know how the first True Knot became the True Knot. I felt there was a hint of the darkness within man (Original sin) and our rejecting of it in the way he described the True Knot as always having been with us but outside of us. The idea that evil has an everyday face (The elderly RVers) and goes amongst us.

I did get tearful at the end and during the Hospice death scenes. I am also pleased that King made it clear just how much Danny had been damaged by his childhood (who wouldn't be?) rather than writing a character who had brushed it off. The reappearance of Dick Halloran was wonderful-like meeting up with an old friend. I would love to know even more about him and appreciated the little bits of his life that King gave us. Also the idea that his Mother Wendy had to bear some responsibility for Danny's trauma at the hands of his Father was suggested even though 'The Shining' made it cloear how limited her options were- no money, no family, living in a time when finding work was hard for anybody let alone a single Mother.

I found it to be less dark than The Shining, and a bit more of a people pleaser type story (in that what I was expecting to happen didn't happen but probably should have).

I enjoyed the book and thought that the True Knot were interesting. I would have liked to know more about how they came to be. And perhaps more about Rose's past as well.

For fans of the film of 'The Shining' (definitely not Steven King) can I recommend the documentary into the possible references etc inserted by Kubrick into this film?

It's called 'Room 237' and it is brilliant. Watched it a few days ago and boy does it make you see the film in a new way.

The people had the shine or some other ability and True Knor hunted them down to either use their ability or to consume it.

Room 237 is on Youtube in installments LaQueen. Well worth watching. Some of the theories are far out but intelligently argued.
