My favourite authors are Ian McEwan, Sebastian Faulks, Kazuo Ishiguro and Margaret Atwood. I've adored everything they've written. So who else might I like please? I need something new to read! Smile

Foosyerdoos · 20/09/2013 22:00

Douglas Coupland
Haruki Murakami

Slippydippysoap · 20/09/2013 22:02

Haruki Murakami is amazing!

EsTutMirLeid · 20/09/2013 22:05

(any Carter book would do but TMT is good. And Martin Amis is good if you really like McEwan) Smile

EsTutMirLeid · 20/09/2013 22:06

No it's not, where did I get that from?

EsTutMirLeid · 20/09/2013 22:13

Oooooohhh after a very quick google I like the look of Haruki Murakami!!
Is 1Q84 any good? It appears to be 3 books?

The Magic Toy Sop description on amazon sounds a bit too unusual for me. Is it?

Sarah Waters! , Angela Carter, Martin Amis as mentioned.

Theincidental · 20/09/2013 22:28

Murakami''s After Dark is very good.

Can only echo coupland and carter as well- both brilliant.

Irvine welsh, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, emile Zola - also on my favourites and I love the authors you've listed.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/09/2013 22:29

Alice Munroe, another Canadian

SageBush · 20/09/2013 22:31

Carol Shields is another brilliant writer - 'Unless' is astoundingly good. I also agree with the Angela Carter and Sarah Waters recommendations.

SageBush · 20/09/2013 22:32

Oh, how about Donna Tartt?

EsTutMirLeid · 20/09/2013 23:03

I've downloaded lots of samples onto my kindle, thanks for the recommendations!

You would probably like Julian Barnes.
And The English Patient.

ButterMyArse · 21/09/2013 00:26

I third (or fourth) Murukami. Norwegian Wood is AMAZING. Amazing, incredible ... one of my favourite ever books.

DuchessofMalfi · 21/09/2013 06:22

I read Norwegian Wood a couple of weeks ago and loved it too. My first Murakami. Looking forward to reading more.

Also like McEwan. Atonement is one of my favourite novels. I'm still working my way through his novels, but did like Enduring Love - was very good.

rootypig · 21/09/2013 06:29

Siri Hustvedt The Blindfold

rootypig · 21/09/2013 06:29

Oh yes Alice Munro! Breathtaking

haverer · 21/09/2013 06:42

I love your favourites and also AL Kennedy.

MaggieMaggieMaggieMcGill · 21/09/2013 06:52

I was thinking Murakami too.
Also, these are books aimed at young adults but they are well worth reading, The Ask and The Answer series by Patrick Ness. He has also recently published a ook for adults but I am yet to read it.
Also Dream Number Nine by the guy who wrote Cloud Atlas, which I could not get on with but Dream Number Nine is an amazing book.
And lastly, try Special Topics in Calamity Physics, amazing story.
Oh and yy to Donna Tartt!

MaggieMaggieMaggieMcGill · 21/09/2013 06:53

Obviously that was meant to read Book. Or I was speaking Librarian!

EsTutMirLeid · 21/09/2013 07:45

Thank you, thank you. That's great I've been struggling to find any other authors whose style suits what I like.

How about Alan Hollinghurst - maybe start with The Line of Beauty.

You might also like Ann Patchett. Bel Canto and State of Wonder are particularly good.

tobiasfunke · 21/09/2013 10:36

Isabel Allende, Jonathan Franzen, Jeffrey Eugenides

MaggieMaggieMaggieMcGill · 21/09/2013 12:08

Definitely yy to Isabel Allende, my favorite by her is The House of Spirits.
