One word sleepyhead - library. Mine is great and if they don't have a new title in stock they order it for me - costs 50p. (I'm in London, not sure it's the same everywhere.) Seriously, I haven't bought a book all year but I've read about 30 so far.

You're totally right... I've been completely sucked in by the instant nature of an Amazon Kindle purchase, even though I've now got a list as long as your (virtual) arm waiting for me to read.

Plus, now that ds2's old enough for Bounce and Rhyme sessions, I'm there every week more or less.

I've been holding out for Madaddam by Margaret Atwood and now I have it lined up next on my kindle.

Thanks for all the replies. I have added all your recommendations to my Amazon Christmas list. I tend to get a bit stuck in an admittedly pleasant reading groove so being pushed out of that via new suggestions is great .

Donna Tartt takes so many years to write her books so will have to read 'The Goldfinch' really slowly to savour it.

I didn't know about the Bryson either so that is a lovely surprise. I always peruse the USA Amazon site which is where I found it plus Wally Lamb and Fannie Flagg. I try to look for the books there then contact the second hand sellers direct if possible and in that way, i assuage some of my Amazon-guilt.

Eleanor Catton's 'The Luminaries' - have ordered that straight away as very behind on the nominees- I always try to read some of them.

of the booker nominees, i'll be reading the lowland - jhumpa lahiri is a great short story writer. the eleanor catton thing doesn't appeal to me, somehow.

EsTut you'll find some of the books I mentioned pinned on mine because some of them are advance published in the USA and I buy them then. Or I pin when I hear of their impending to remind me to buy them. I use Pin as an aide memoire sometimes....

Elizabeth Jane Howard's final book on the Cazalet family and Penelope Lively has a new book, can't remember the title - but both out this Autumn.

Ian Rankin's new Rebus: Saints of the Shadow Bible. It is due out in the UK in November but not in the US until January, so I will buy the hardcover from Amazon UK as I won't be able to wait.

I just put the new Fannie Flagg on my wishlist and discovered that I have not read her last book. The library has it so I am headed there now.

mignonette Have you read any of Margaret Maron's Deborah Knott mysteries? She is a judge who sleuths in her spare time in a fictional county in North Carolina. The books are peopled with all sorts of quirky Southerners.

Thank you Scone I haven't and am eagerly googling now. That sounds so much up my street. I love a modern Southern Gothic. I envy you at having two Fanny Flaggs to read! You'd like Michael Lee West too if you like FF.

Hilary Mantel's final instalment of her Thomas Cromwell trilogy, The Mirror and the Light. Not entirely sure if there's a publication date, though. I know her health is poor, and I think she's the only contemporary novelist whose physical well-being I actively worry about!

Adding lots of these to my library request list. Even though they've started charging, it's still a bargain.
